Had my most interesting ferry ride last summer in Albania.

There used to be car ferry, but it was discontinued only a few weeks prior to our trip. But we didn't want to quit just now. I saw some pictures of the small boat that is still going and I thought - hell, it's Albania, they will surely take us on board with the bikes. And they do.

Notice in the picture above, it is only an old bus welded into a boat. The seats are still inside and the ship is being steered by the old bus steering wheel.

Let's go!

The ship is loaded to its brim, with food and other goods for the locals.

The ship stops about three or four times at landing places like this.

Usually, no people leave or board the boat, only goods are exchanged.

There are a few small villages and farms in the mountains, their only way to get to civilization is through this ferry that runs once a day in each direction. And in winter, they are cut off. Rough life.

The ferry ride though is very beautiful.

Boarding the ferry wasn't too difficult. The boat was about level to the ground and the platform was properly made of asphalt. But here, on the other side... Well, it's a different story.

It seems they only heaped some gravel there that is now slowly eroding into the water. Two old wooden planks are quickly placed. With the fairing of the Daytona being so low, we have to lift if onto the planks.

The gap is about two meters and with the full bike on it, the wood started to squeak.

Phew. Adrenaline is rushing through our veins.

All went well, although we don't want to think about what could have gone wrong.

The Fefine river, in the rainy season it runs deep and fast, but never wide. In the middle of the dry season you can cross no problems, the other times you have to haul your bike into a dug out and walk it across. UTM 28 P 630842/1308005

Cable ferry (donation from the Netherlands), fairly unreliable, crossing the Corubal river. UTM 28 P 585649/1318971

When the ferry doesn't run, this little boat is the alternative:

Hah! The bus is a German Kassbohrer Setra, had a tour of the factory. Was a family owned company, they sold the bus division,Setra, to Mercedes. And kept the snow cat division, Pisten Bully. It was sold as well a few years later.
Very good busses, to this day.
motorcycles are like fly rods, you need way more than one.

Your bike on the ferry.

Here in southern NB we've got a lot of cable ferries, and stringing them together makes a very enjoyable ride.

Hoping to get more photos this year, but last year (being my first) I was enjoying myself too much to worry about many photos.

F99 Gondola Point - Kingston Penninsula

F95 Summerville - Milledgeville

Will add more as I get a decent bag to put cameras in, and get some more miles on!
