Howdy y'all,

I'm kicking this thread off as the official Rally Dos Sertões 2010 thread. Four inmates are already registered for this rally, which is the world's second largest off-road race, only behind the legendary Dakar Rally. Here are the competitors:

Antonio Narino, aka Farioli
Phil Bowman, aka BicyclePhil
Darin Craig, aka Durwood
Dave Peckham, aka GSNorCal

Granted, the rally is not until August, but we're already beginning preparations and getting some international press. So, I thought I'd kick this thread off as a way to publish items of interest and to get some excitement building. Hopefully each competitor will add a bit of their personal stories to this thread along the way, too.

Having the date set, Sertões 2010 finish line will be in Fortaleza

Being the world’s second largest off-road race, the great Brazilian adventure will happen between August 10th and 21st

The 18th edition of Sertões International Rally in 2010 already has a scheduled date, and places to start and finish. Dunas Race, organizer of the event, has confirmed that Sertões – world’s second largest off-road race, only behind the legendary Dakar Rally – will start in Goiânia, Goiás state, on August 10th, and finish in Fortaleza, Ceará state, on the 21st.

Being out of Sertões International Rally route since 2004, Fortaleza (CE) is once again hosting the competition’s finish line. Along its 17 editions, Ceará’s capital has hosted the party in six other opportunities – 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. Juazeiro do Norte (1994 and 2009), Quixadá (2000 and 2001), Crateús (2002 and 2008) and Ubajara (2004) were the cities that received the huge caravan. In 2009, the caravan had 1,700 people

“Besides the competition itself, Sertões International Rally also wants to promote touristic points in Brazil. That’s the reason why we are going to alternate the finish line cities among important touristic cities in northeastern Brazil. After six years we are back in Fortaleza, which is one of the local references for domestic and international tourism. The rally is shown in more than 65 countries in the world, and this positive broadcasting is really important in promoting the main touristic centers in Brazil. Producing the race is our main goal, but one of our missions is to enjoy the appeal and promote Brazil, especially in Europe”, says Marcos Moraes, Dunas Race CEO.

Bigger and stronger – “In 2004, the last time we finished in Fortaleza, we were not in the Rally World Championship. Now the number of foreign competitors has grown significantly, and this will be one more attraction for the city. After six years, Sertões is back in Ceará capital, bigger and stronger. We are a much more complete and powerful event than five years ago, and this will surely be noticed in commerce, tourism and services in Fortaleza”, added Moraes.

“Sertões International Rally has settled as one of the most important in the world. In 2010, it’s 18th edition, Ceará will once again figure in the calendar. This will be an excellent moment to show a new Ceará to Brazil and the world”, said Arialdo de Melo, Secretary of the Civil House from Fortaleza.

Dry season – In Sertões’ last edition, the competitors traveled 5,045 kilometers between the end of June and beginning of July. In 2010 the race will be organized in August, and this change happens due to the rescheduling of Dunas Race’s events, and also with the concern to avoid the rain season in northeastern Brazil.

“The date change meets the needs of Dunas Race to reschedule businesses and events, and the trend is that from next year on, Sertões International Rally will always take place in August. This will also favor the competition, because we will have better climate conditions this time of year”, completed Moraes.

Hmmmm. Here's a photo of my plane, so I hope you guys are not counting on everyones bikes going with me. We could actually ride to Brazil faster, as we would be looking at 80KTS, no wind! My main concern would be Dave's bucket shipping...would it be classified as HAZMAT, or something far worse?
