Hey, Copa.

How did you took these mud fotos?

Your bike looks like a small toy bike in them. Long lens, short exposure, right?

I'm not positive what lens I used that day, but I'm pretty sure that was an 85mm lens on my D70s.
I think that was it because by the time I took those photos I had already been struggling to get my bike out of that mud hole for hours. I ended up calling my son to come help me (and asked him to bring the camera). I add that bit because with it late in the day there wasn't much light so the 85mm lens is the best I have for low light.

Without much light you need the lens aperture really opened up a lot. It lets in the most light that way, but the trade off is that the focus point is really short. That's why only part of the bike is in focus. That short focus is the main character of those shots. It's used sometimes just for effect, but in this case it was out of necessity due to the light.

As far as the bike looking small, I think that's mostly because (a) the mud is so deep, and (b) with no zoom on the lens I had to find places to stand where I could frame the shot. There wasn't anywhere to stand where I could get the whole scene, so I ended up with that close-up view.
