New DR650 Owner

I'm really just a poser when it comes to adventure riding. Gravel and nice dirt roads are my favorites. None of that wading the streams and big-assed rock stuff.

After a year and a half on a Yamaha Super Tenere, I found myself wanting something just a bit smaller, and maybe a bit more more "off road" oriented.

In the end, it was between a KLR and this DR.

It had to make 60 mph all day long for those 2-lane road days, and have a seat that wouldn't kill ya after just 20 miles.

I lurked around here and read threads until it drove me nuts.

Picked up a slightly used 2012 DR650 and it appears that I'll have some more reading to do. Ugh.

Great source of information here. Even if some of you are crazy.

I've visited a couple vendor sites that seem to have EVERYTHING for a DR .... and stuff that I would have never imagined.

Wow.

In the short term - a luggage rack and skid plate.

congrats!
obviously you have a lot of company, and a good many of them have owned a series of expensive bikes over a long riding career, and move to the DR for sheer fun, farkle, and adventure. it is one of the few true "Round The World" capable bikes.

Seat Concepts can fix you up for those long boring stretches - most like their seat the best of the bunch and its one of the less expensive. some of us modded our own with good results. Then there is an endless aftermarket of options and upgrades and accessories. One thing that is in very short supply however: worries.

enjoy the miles of smiles. I most often remark that the DR is a 'happy bike' ... it just loves to air it out and get dirty

What came with the bike?

Being 200lbs lighter than the s10, and more dirt ( 21 tyre, narrow wheel base, more ground clearance), you should be doing well.

While hanging with the dual sport riders of Louisiana, I got to take her off road and into the forest and was very satisfied with the bike. I had stock tryes and kept the pressure up.
Its a stock bike
I talked to previous owners who liked the bike. One person now owns the s10.

I like the s10, and actually narrowed my choices down to it and the DR.
Ijust last night I actually had a dream about buying and owning the candy yams and keeping the DR.

The bike is mostly bone stock. It has a Sergeant (spelling) seat and a carb kit (still in the box)

Less than 1,000 miles and perfect condition. THAT I can fix.

I'm not new to bikes... having bought my first bike in 1971, an SL100 Honda and since owning more that 50 more of virtually all makes and models. But, nearly all of them street bikes.

I try to buy one or two every year then fix them and sell in the spring. It's a hobby and a free hobby at that.

I should have never bought that Super Tenere. NOW look what's happened to me !!!

Welcome aboard. You'll love the 'ride'. Seems we have similar taste in Bikes. My first bike was a SL100 too but a couple of years later than you. Lets say the late 70's. I have 3 of them in my back shed at the moment that I bought as basket cases and that I intend restoring 1 of... When I stop buying shit for my DR650 that is.

In over forty years and probably as many bikes I've had three different DR 650's. I just keep coming back to them and with the current one tricked out just the way I want it will be a keeper for many more years, others will come and go the DR stays!

Enjoy yours and give it some time to see what accessories best suit your needs and riding style, from mild to full tilt these bikes are a great platform to start from.

I need some luggage carrying capacity. Nothing huge - probably just a rear rack and some way to mount some of those waterproof throw-overs. Somebody please point me to a thread.
