Cheers!
I'd be up for a Friday / Sat return on Sunday trip down there. The Atascadero area (hwy 58) Pozo saloon, Los Padres Nat Forrest would be incredible in a few weeks. Great mix of twisty pavement and great fire road and wider trails once in the park from the 58 side. Have not done the Carrizo but always have wanted to. How about Feb 5-7? Truck bikes down, stay at Motel 6 (do day trips out of there) in Atascadero, head out Santa Margarita 58. to LPNF. What say ye Scottymac? We talked about that last month...

Sounds like fun if its more towards the end of Feb. for me. I'm pulling
the forks and shock off my bike this coming weekend and sending them off to get re-valved. Figure it will be another week or so to get them done,
shipped back and installed.

I'm looking forward to a ride in the Pozo/Carrizo as well, but not until things are drier and warmer (admittedly a fair-weather motorcyclist ). With this recent cycle of storms passing through everything could become a mess here, there, and everywhere (except for the deserts I suppose). I'd be curious to hear what the conditions are like down there if you guys head down in the next few weeks.

I'm a camper, so I would rather just stay out on the Carrizo. Also there's no gas out there and we will need a base to refuel.

I've ridden ther a number of times. Been up and down the valley most of the time on Elkhorn road. Last time we camped at Selby, and rode west up into the Caliente Range... nice fire roads and views. Then we went east over Hurricane Crocker Spring Rd. into the oil fields which are interesting to me. Got gas at Taft. These roads are more interesting than the Elkhorn or Soda Lake roads.

BTW I bought a gas can and strapped it on the back in Atascadero so I had enough gas for the hungry 990. Without a truck you will need it. Bring water too. The campgrounds are basic... tables and outhouses.

You probably already know this... there's tons of info on dyvking's web page:

http://homepage.mac.com/wbunning/carrizods/carrizo.html

I always stop at the ranger station, Goodwin, they have some nice exhibits and the rangers like to see some people once in a while. Last time I was there we only saw 1 car the whole time.

Have fun!

Anyway, expect snow in the higher areas up there, and expect the stream crossings to be extra hairy.
Was a bit muddy up on walker ridge. . . .but I stopped worrying about the mud once I hit the snow

I couldn't get to Bartlett springs, had to turn around here (cold springs mountain):

Fun day- a bit more rain than sun, but great riding all day.

You should have called

I would have told you its all snowed in Glad you got out. It looks like youre still sporting that shinny new slick in the rear. I had the two wheel drive Ural up there and got stuck last week. I dug it out but it wasnt fun.

It was fun up there- I went up Walker ridge, then headed back down to clearlake, and over highland springs/old toll road, and then down geysers road. Does this look fun or what:

We should head up there when there's a bit more dirt open, Cory. And I should get a real rear tire. . . . I had a hell of a time turning around in that snow.
