Hey guys I got an email from Paul wondering what I've been up to, so I thought I'd show off my new ADV machine...

That's right it's a Prius bitches! Borrowed it to save some cash getting down to Deat Valley. It's amazing how challenging it makes even the easiest of dirt roads. I damn near didn't make it up and over a coupla three inch rocks and scrapped the undercariage on the little bump in the middle of the road.

I realize this is a motorcycle forum, but I thought some of y'all might dig this trip. My GF and I went backpacking up to Panamint City in the Panamint Mountains. (The range that forms Death Valley's western boarder.)

Looking down on the Panamint Valley headed for Ballarat.

The trail up to PC goes straight up Surprise Canyon. The first mile or so your scrambling up these little waterfalls.

Panamint City was a silver minning town first occupied in 1872 and has been sporadically mined as late as '83 when it was finally closed due to the costs of keeping the road through Surprise Canyon open. There's a fair amount left of the city, including our swank digs for the next two nights... The Panamint Hilton. It's another user maintained cabin.

Lot's of minning equipment left to play on. Note the snow. This was just last April.

This is what the Hilton looked like at noon on day 2.

This is the main attraction of PC. It's the original smelter smoke stack from the 1870s.

Hiking to a secret cabin known as The Castle with PC in the valley below.

This is The Castle. Both The Castle and Hilton have running water and sometimes even a flushing toilet.

So that's some of what I've been up to. It looks like y'all have been having a bit of fun and I can't wait to get another bike and join you in Baja.

I don't know about fitting in... the 30 '06 and dead animals in the back kinda stand out.

Yeah it just needs a lift!

We knew it would at least rain. temps were as low as 29 degrees @7,000' in PC and as high as 75 down in the valley. It was funny coming back down as it was pefect weather below 5,000'. We past some people coming up in Tevas and shorts. When I told them it was snowing up ahead they didn't beleive me. I wish I coulda been there when they got to the snow.

Bike rack

I have often joked, no mentioned that it would be good to put one bike on front and rear racks on a prius

I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet... The guys over on BARF are doing a ride down to SLO county next weekend, Friday-Sunday. Looks like I'm going for sure. Looks like it's all pavement, but there's a few "goaty" roads in there. I'm from SLO so I know my way around down there pretty well. It should be fun..

Laugh Funduro, Sheetiron, Eclipse ... ?

Hey all,

Been spending quite a bit of time up by Stonyford ... here's a pic of Cary racing with the AFM at Thunderhill this past weekend ... she and I were racing in their 250 Production class (thanks to Erich Stiegler of the Erich Stiegler Insurance Agency, who sponsors the 250 Production class and posted this pic on BARF):

Cary has the yellow plate and #888 is Jimi Mac ...

Anyway, we could still see lots of snow up on Snow Mountain from the racetrack on Sunday ...

I'm off to Deer Valley tomorrow night (group camp by Lake Pillsbury) for the Funduro, and to Stonyford on Friday and Ft Bragg on Saturday for the Sheetiron, and then hopefully up to Ruth Lake on Sunday night to see the eclipse ...

Want to see if I can find Sheetiron Mountain on Thursday or Friday, or maybe do the "Snow Mountain Loop" ...

Hope to see some ADV Riders on the trail!

@ Just Paul: Got the idea somewhere that you may have had a change of heart and will be doing the Sheetiron? Hard splits two-up on your KTM Adventure? :-)

See you around the campfire,
-- SFMCjohn
