Mendocino NF up north is probably the best. Panoche Valley to the south used to be better when Clear Creek was fully open. The Sierras are a long way east for a day trip; along the coast the "Lost Coast" is a long ways north, but the Coast Ridge Roads off of Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd (Ft. Hunter-Liggett) and such are great. I hear there are great scenic camp spots off of it too, or try to get a spot at Kirk Creek Campground, at Hwy 1.

If you want to ride further in a day, Carrizo Plain is a great trip (101 - Hollister - Hwy 25 - Hwy 198 - Parkfield Grade - Cholame Road - Bitterwater Rd - Soda Lake Rd).

Hey guys, just got my WRR here and looking for some dirt roads! Took the bike to Metcalf Moto park this past weekend but it was kinda small. Looking for something more cross-country and scenic. Any suggestions between SF and San Jose perhaps up in the Santa Cruz hills?

If you're looking for dirt, go to Hollister Hills.

If you're looking for pavement, here are some fun roads (by no means a complete list):

Broken up by General Area…

Alpine Rd/Pescadero Creek Rd.
Mountain Charlie Rd.
Zayante Rd
Skyline Blvd from Black Rd. to Mountain Charley
Bear Creek Rd.

Kings Canyon Rd.
Tunitas Creek Rd
Stage Rd.
Gazos Creek Rd./Cloverdale

Bonnydoon/Pine Flat/Empire Grade
Smith Grade
Ice Cream Grade/Felton-Empire
Jameson Creek Rd.
Hwy 236 through Big Basin

You should be able to build some good loops out of those.

Enjoy the ride!

BTW, be watchful this time of year. In the hills, the shady spots can have ice well into the afternoon, plus since they stay wet all day, algae starts to grow and it's not green, it's clear, slippery ooze. Plus there's more crap in the corners now, waiting to cause a lowside.

Best bet is up in the Sierra or Mendocino as the closest. Carrizo and Los Padres and Death Valley are the other options this time of year.

Try Mines Road out of Livermore. Goes up over the top of Mt. Hamilton and drops you in San Jose.

Also check out Summit Rd. heading SE off the 17. There are plenty a cool roads over here. There is some dirt you may be able to ride. Check google maps to see what connects. This area was recommend to me by a CHP cop working in Aptos. Just start wandering and see where you end up.

I'll vouch for vegetation and debris on the road as well. Some of the roads aren't in a great state as well.

Not really anything left as dirt roads in that area. South of San Jose there are a few, like La Gloria Road (Kings City to Hwy 25 south of Hollister).

Clear Creek Road is probably the best (Hwy 25 to Los Gatos Creek-Coalinga Road on one end, and New Idria-Panoche Road on the other) down near Pinnacles NP south of Hollister. BUT part of Clear Creek Road is now intermediate (the climb up from New Idria, which is a spooky ghost mining town).

Your best option for true scenic dirt roads, and days of riding is Mendocino NF north of Clear Lake up above Napa-Sonoma. Otherwise you have to go south to the Carrizo Plain NM (sw of Bakersfield in the coast range) or east to the Sierras and beyond for true scenic dirt roads.

Wait, there is a nice stretch down near Ft. Hunter-Liggett, the Coast Ridge Road off Nacimiento-Ferguson Road, just above Hwy 1 near Kirk Creek Campground (south of Big Sur). There are a few great dirt roads there!

Lots of nice stuff in that area. If you're on a dual sport, Buzzard Lagoon Rd is fun. Might be closed during the winter, though.
