Don't ever replace that sump. Few badges of honor like that one amigo.

Suddenly I hunger for JBweld... in my truck, my bike, my office desk, my underwear drawer...

That's a REAL weld... a TIG weld. Here's the big ugly JB wad that got me from bolivia to chile to argentina:

"amais 2 sans 3 as we say in France... This time was the right one....just between 2 borders on a gravel road, a car I was passing decided to change line at the last second...I had no time to avoid it, I remembered hitting the brake but not much effect on this road... bang I hit the rear and off the bike...this time not much luck... my right shoulder was very sore...the bike puking gas on her side..".

Spencer
The quote above was taken from Jeromes Travelnandriding site. He has just started north again after making it to TDF. Sounds like he is still having quite a time with his broken shoulder. I've been following you both and am really impressed with your trip. I'm hoping to do this in '12. I've just started building up my '93 GS. The question that I have is IRT changing over to points from the electronic ignition. Was this a hard mod to undertake?
I'm looking forward to your next post, I'm hooked. Thanks

Yep, he's getting along alright. I met up with him in Buenos Aires for lunch just before I hit the road. Turns out he rode all the way from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires with only one hand due to his bum shoulder, sometimes using no hands and just shifting his weight around to turn. He had his throttle and steering rigged up with bungies. That guy is a nut. One hell of a rider though.

Thanks for the reminder. Gotta do that. I'll have to pick out an especially ugly sock for this application.

Not at all. The only hard part is finding one of the points cannisters. You'll need to switch to a 3 ohm coil. Tear out your entire existing ignition: coil, beancan and ICU. Run the hot lead supplying power to your old coil to your new coil then run another wire off the coil to the single terminal on the condensor on the outside of the points can. That's it.

Quote "probably the most pathetic entrance of all time: blown fork seals with fork oil all over the place, blown rear shock, cracked oil pan patched with JB weld, leaking pushrod seals and to top it all off I got a flat tire a block from the shop and pushed it the rest of the way.

Javier at Dakar Motos is getting used to this, as most Airhead BMW's arrive this way Oh yeah, and KLR's too...

Carry on... Suerte
P.S. watch out for the Rea's on Ruta 40

You're gonna need to tell me what a 'Rea' is before I can watch out for them.

Anyway, we made it to Ushuaia (photos coming soon) and plan to stay here for a few more days before turning north (!?!?) via ruta 40. My rear shock is leaking oil badly despite being "rebuilt" in buenos aires, one of my companions is direly in need of a rear tire, and another of our group is waiting for a replacement alternator rotor 500 miles north of here after his omega failed quite decisively (wires actually sticking out of the rotor!!). We'll probably backtrack to Rio Gallegos and see what can be had there before heading west (and then north again). It's going to feel weird actually heading TOWARD home again rather than farther away from it.

Any comments on your bikes? Based on all the mods/upgrades you did to your R80, which ones worked well and which did not?

How about the other bikes in your group? I have a DR650 now, how did it do?

I'm surprised you guys ran out of tires ... in all your pics your bikes look like they are loaded down like a tire store! Wha' Happened?

Good luck, safe riding. Hope you get to go to Perito Moreno and swim out around an ice berg. Fun stuff and not something you get to do everyday either!

Safe riding! What's the plan once you head North?
