Oooooooooop's my bad. I'd delete the post but now it's been quoted

Guess I better do more research

I'm just wondering if the same security issues might have scrapped the Africa Race.

I agree. After last year and what seemed a conservative, but promising start, I certainly didn't expect only 4 bikes.

I think it all boils down to money Tony, especially this year... the Africa Race is almost Dakar money (entry fee wise), and while you do get a corking route for your money, not a lot of amateur riders can afford €13,000+ for one event?

Heroes-Legend was the same this year - only around half the number of competitors compared to last year...

There is a certain economy of scale, and I wonder how long the "smaller" rallies can last w/o meeting it.

4 moto's
13 Auto's
4 trucks
and 4 "Raid" participants...

The accountants will have the red ink out doing the books on this one for sure...

The already bad news gets even worse
The Senegalese competitor never showed up for the event for some reason, so he's out leaving only the 3 Italians in the race

But here some pics anyways from stage 1:

At least there won't be a problem of getting on to the podium!

I imagine the 'raid' classification is like the 'bivouac-bivouac' route on Heroes-Legend - that is a non-competitive class for essentially stock vehicles, that follow the assistance route and possibly some of the easier stages (but not against the clock)...
