Thanks for the wishes, guys! I will be driving down for scrutineering on Tuesday and will upload some nice pics here, for sure!

As for the dangers, there are always going to be small gangs who seek attention, not only in Africa...

Heading off to France tomorrow morning for the AR. 1200km one way, so it'll be a nice roadtrip. At least there's no snow to worry about!
As to why I'm not joining hom, well it's because I lack having the necessary funds. I'm still young and have plenty of time to do these sort of adventures later on (I hope)! I plan on doing the Tuareg in March, although I'm not 100% sure, yet...

In the meantime, to brush up your French skills:

What a trip it was! Left on Monday, stayed their on Tuesday and went home on Wednesday. On Tuesday, we did the administrative checks and scrutineering. We stayed there from around 11:00 up until around 23:00 when we got to the hotel (with all sorts of briefings and the ceremonial start). I got about 4 hours of sleep before we had to get up at 3 in the morning to bring my dad to the start again where they would all drive in a bus down to Almeria (to avoid having to ride the 1000km liaison to Almeria, bikes were loaded onto the sweeper trucks). Drove the 1200km non-stop for 12 hours with the trailer back home and was dead tired, but that's part of the entire experience I guess

Here some pics I took.

Unloading the bike:

Another rider, also on an older steel framed WR:

2 more bikes, some of the newer models, though (BMW G450X and Honda CRF450X):

One of the many new KTM 450 Rallye Replicas:

KTM 525EXC in the raid class, I believe:

KTM 690RR:

Trucks and other cars:

Waiting around for the admin. checks:

Smile for the cameraman:

In line for scrutineering:

I met one of the ERTF guys that I last saw in Abu Dhabi from the Desert Challenge. He was surprised and happy to see me again. One bloke from ERTF was new, a South African fellow. I could tell he wasn't French like the other guys are, since he was rolling his r's quite a bit. I could sense he had a bit of a Dutch accent and was surprised to find out he was from SA. Nice guy, too!
My dad met the guy that did the technical scrutineering and straight away rememberd his face (looked a bit like Santa Claus) from his early rallyes days in Egypt from the Pharaons Rallye. Honestly, the technical check was a real joke. The only thing he looked at was whether the rear brake light and fog light worked, nothing more! Apart from the bike, the helet and check/back protector were checked, that's all. MAybe he has full faith in my dad, who knows?

A Suzuki DRZ400. Saw a lot of things on that bike that made me sick: Battery mounted on the rear fender (for whatever reason), wiring for the rear lights fixed loosely and worst of all his exhaust was fix to the rear frame with a long and thin piece of carbonfibre, not exactly the best idea for holding the heavy exhaust, especially when you fall on that side.

Low rider assistance van, filled to the brim with stuff (to the right is our Santa Claus):

Bike in parc fermé:

Other bikes ready:

Jean-Louis Schlesser and his buggy show up:

Race number bibs:

The ceremonial start in the evening:

Bikes lined up at night:

Quick rego plate:

The green WR (literally green) had some solar panels mounted on the front and rear fenders. I wonder what they're for?

Mum and Dad:

At the ceremonial start:

Thanks for the pictures and good luck for your father, Tony!

So, Sonangol (Angolan oil company) is footing the Africa Race bill, huh?! It's the first time isn't it?

Sonangol have been behind Schlessers effort for some time as well if memory serves me well.

@Tony,

Whats the relationship with Owaka and your dad? Saw the stickers on his tank, for fun?

Ha, excellent, I think that's the support van for the Greeks Palaskas and Zachariou, they are competing in the cars
with a Mitsubishi Pajero T1

I'm so happy for Thomas, and so happy the RACE still develop.

There's a lot of car and a good number of bikes. It was time!!!

From now on, I'm sure you will be post the news anytime you'll got it.

And any time you'll speak to Thomas, remember to him I'm pushing his bike... mentally!!!

"Be strong as ever and come back with another podium!!!"

Bye Tony, Happy New Year, to You and Mum. She's got an amazing smile, in that pictures with Dad!!!

Bye

Owaka is a team created by Laurent Casters. He took part in the 1st AR together with my dad. It's a bit of sponsoring involved in the whole thing, not much, though...

Ciao Carlo,
As always, thank you for the kind words

I talked to him on the phone this afternoon. He said he had a crash on the 1st stage and cut up his arm quite a bit and had some muscle pains in that arm from lifting the bike after another smaller crash today (terrain is slippery he says), but he's still in the race and strong!

Here 2 pics of him from today:

Bad day for my dad today. Crashed towards the end of the stage and tumbled the bike forwards, which means the entire nav tower is messed up (not sure of the state of the fairing). He said he would fix it tonight by welded it back together. Morocco doesn't seem to treat him well...

Happy new years anyway!

THAT'S THE PLUS!! IS THOMAS OK?

Let us have good news asap, please.

Tony, how it seems AR 2012, respect AR 2009 "first release"?
I mean at the start, in France.
