Yep, my old man's fine!!! He gave us a call this morning pre-start and told me that he had the nav tower welded (not the best job he has seen). He wasn't hurt from the crash, just his one arm is cut up a bit from his crash on the first day. Less rocks now and more sand to look forward to!

Steady on guys!
My dad gives us a call every day, usually after finishing the stage. He reports to us how unbelievably rocky everything is. He even lost his bashplate as the 2 main screws on the front holding it in place got loose and unscrewed themselves!
The welded nav tower didn't really hold up well it will need refixing. Also, his front rim got a crack in it, so he had to replace the front wheel. Today is the rest day midway so plenty of time to fix things up.

Tough day on Wednesday! Pure soft sand stage in Mauritania. Tonnes of guys constantly got stuck. Dad phoned us and said you rolled for a few meters, then your entire front wheel would sink up to the high fender. No fun digging the bike out a couple of times in a short distance.
He had to spend the night in the desert after being exhausted from the constant digging, but got the the camp on Thursday morning. He skipped that stage (loop to the same camp) and got the maximum day penalty. Not really a problem, as he's not really in it for the position...

Today's stage was cancelled due to strong sandstorms, therefore just a road liaison to the next bivouac, and the next stage tomorrow!

Late arrival

Hi Tony - Just started following your Dad's progress today. (sorry - late I know ). Sounds as if he is having a few problems but thankfully seems to be able to take care of them - experience counts. Excellent updates - keep them coming & Happy New Year. BTW still not clear if the Desert Challenge will actually take place this year or not.

This year Competitor list is:
16 BIKES + 1 QUAD
41 CARS
5 TRUCKS

RAID:
6 CARS +1 BIKE

36 CARS+TRUCKS FOR ASSISTANCE (just to know how much the bivouac was full...)

Not bad at all, the numbers, this year!!

Hi Tony,
naturally I'm anytime on Iritrack Africa race...
I saw Thomas was stuck in the dunes, and not only him.
I saw yesterday was another diffucult stage. And was shortened because of it.

This difficulty give to the race a Big Name.

Tell Dad my best compliments for all the job he are doing: amazing!!!

That night I think about him more than one time...

Hope he will do the best in the last 2 stages, to reach another time the Pink Lake, and, of course, having so lot of emotions reaching it...

C'mon Thomas, I'm pushing You.

Cheers Tony.

C'est fini! My dad reached Lac Rose today!
Tomorrow, he'll be meeting one of his old friends that did the AR in the first year (he lives there).

His flight back home will be on Tuesday, a tonne of stories to listen to!
