Lance - from your blog it sounds like your trip is going well...great pictures as usual By the way, have you seen this thread: Lewis & Clark, Again - 2009?
Thanks BG. I haven't seen it but my plan in 2012 is to ship my bike to Seattle. Ride up and around Alaska and then take the Lewis and Clark expedition route back to St. Louis. I know... I need to get through this trip first but you know me... always the planner.

Cheers,

Hey Bruce, I did one back in 1969 on a bet for a case of beer, before they had an Iron Butt. I'm game, but it'll probably have to be next spring. I had to have my wrist fused in February and so far, 350 miles in a day seems to be it. It get's better each day though, so maybe late this fall.

I plan on an SS1000, no sweat.

I'm not sure I'd want to do it in a group though...just not my style really.

Looking at the guidelines...am I correct in assuming the goal is 2000 miles in 48 hours??

Think I'm going to have to put that ATV seat pad on....

1,000 in 24 requires a 42mph average. I did it on a bike in 1969 as a stunt (I actually rode around the beltway 16 times) and I've done in a a cage at least 30 times. Twenty straight through to and from Fl, 2 days from Reno, two days from Raton, NM, one day from west of Des Moines. I'll need to replace the KTM with something with a bigger gas tank - you need to be able to cover at least 300 miles between stops. A decent cruise control is another big help. I've done 1,000 in less than 15 hours several times, but not on two wheels. The bike gets tougher because you can't move around as much. And you need to run slab. If you can run 75/80 you can average 65. That will do it.

Map something on good roads - preferabaly in states with at least a posted 70mph speed limit. I81 is only 65 but it connects to I40. We can go up through MD on I68, but we need to stay off of I70 and get to I80. IMHO, I95 south or north is out of the question.

Rush one day, Then a "relaxing" ride back.....

KLR is good for 200 mile range no matter the speed...might be able to do 250, but not likely at the 70-80 MPH rate...but it's something I can validate before spring.

My KTM *supposedly* holds 3.9 gallons. I hit reserve at 2.8 and only have about a half a gallon of reserve. The rest may be in there but I can't get to it.

Good mileage is 45. Average is 35.

My average is a consistant 50 mpg and that's running 65-70 mph most of the time.
Plus my KLR has the super secret reserve section.... I get about a quart from the right side of the tank after using up the "reserve" on the left side...
