Hey

I want to ride well drive from Orem Utah to ST. George this winter then drive to the tip of the Baja Peninsula and back. I think this kind of thing needs more that one rider. Anyone interested?

Question about the ride....

Is this a pavement-only rider or mix of pavement/dirt/sand? I don't know the route so forgive a dumb question.

How many miles a day do you plan, and how many days will it take?

I am no expert

However according to my research it is 1050ish miles from Tijuana to the tip at San Lucas. I think the whole thing could be done in 6 days with a full off day in San Lucas. It is all pavement but pothole pavement. There could be some off road type stuff. I have a BMW R 1150 GS at the moment. This is all still in the research phase to see if people are even interested. I live in Orem Utah and will truck my bike to St. George then ride to South Cally and crash there for a day then get through Tijuana and into the middle of it asap so as to avoid what I have been told are large crime areas.

My bike I want to take to BAJA

That is me in Orem Utah on Dec 10th after the snow barely melted off the road. Sorry about the poor cell phone picture I didn't have my camera with me.

Tijuana to Cabo and back in 6 days is pretty optimistic. Doable, but you are going to miss sooooo much good stuff! You have to remember, the average speed on MX1 is going to be way slower than you are used to around here.

This is true

I am sure you are right. That however is part of the reason I have this post. Everyone lay your wisdom on me. Has anyone here done that ride? All I can do is my best guestimate based on distances and that kinda thing.

Thanks for your replies.

I need to find buddies interested first, then see when they want to go. However I think before the end of the winter is the best time because of temperatures down there. Or spring or March. Still up in the air. If I had the money I would leave after new year but I don't see anyone wanting to do it that fast and again I am still broke for now.

I will have vacation to burn after the first of the year.....I'd like to hear from Hayduke what would constitute the proper time frame to do this ride....

Riding will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no riding...............

I'm no expert, that's for sure. I've only done it in a chase truck, so maybe my sense of the size of the place is skewed by race/chase traffic, etc. I just remember it being painfully slow to cover any distance on MX1. Then on the way back it is worse because you will get stopped at every military checkpoint, and have to open bags, etc. In 6 days down and back on mainly road, I'd say skip Cabo which sucks anyway IMHO and maybe shoot for Mulege or Loreto... that area is absolutely gorgeous! That would give you some time to see other cool places like San Ignacio. I've been going through the maps and different routes lately myself... just never enough time to see everything you want. Baja is alot bigger than it appears just looking at the maps.

Ya maybe for my first time down there if there is a better place to check out it might be a good idea to go there. I hear the east coast of the peninsula has some great fishing and really cool old towns to visit. That could definitely be worth it.

The Northern Baja can be cold and wet in the winter months. Anything south of Mulege you will have much better weather.
If you go in jan or early feb, you may be able to catch the grey wales outside of Guerro Negro or San Ignacio. Well worth it. You can get close enough to touch them as they come alongside the small boats.
I would suggest doing as so many have done. Get a map, jot down some notes from all these guys and go for it. You'll have a great time.
If you can't find a riding buddy, go anyway. I've been to over 40 countries and if I had to wait for a buddy to show up I may have only done 2 or 3. Go for it and post some pics for those of us stuck in the snow.

I agree that is what I usually would do and have done in the past. I just figured given the drug problems in the area that I would see who was down with checking it out. Your information is good also and thanks.
