OK, bought the 12mm Allen socket and removed the steering stem assembly. This is what I found on the botton two races................................

Some Brinelling as expected. The top bearing and races were OK, but I'm ordering tapered roller bearings to replace the stock ball bearings.

Drove out the lower seal and race w/a chisel. Forgot to take a pic of getting it started. Had to drive the chisel straight in as a wedge and work my way around to get enough of a gap to start driving it up. This pic is about after a couple of minutes of carefully working it up.

Then the upper race out of the top of the stem w/a long drift punch. [Forgot to get a pic]

And finally drove out the lower race w/this tool........................

As you can see I'm dragging the race down..............

I ordered A complete tapered brg and seal kit from All Balls Racing.

http://www.allballsracing.com/

Also ordered a new tab washer. I planned to reuse the old one, but it was so thin, and the new one was cheap.

Hopefully I'll get the damn thing back together not this coming weekend , but the following.

Always wanted to do a wrench report.

Now when the new bearings and races come in, I'll have to see if any of my 3/4 Dr sockets will work for driving in the new races. If not, sometines you can get away with using the old ones as a driver as long as the new one bottoms out before the old race starts to engage.

I won't be hesitant to buy a proper driver if needed. We'll see.

Cleaning the bore really good and freezing the race, can really make things go smoother.

Sears sells brass punches in a set of three. I used those to do my BMW headset. The set costs bout $33. But you likely have to order. Not a stocked set.
