Our crack township drivers plow four hours
after the snow is packed down with no salt.
This will look like this for a week ( or longer)
depending on temps. No riding for a while.

I was out for 13 hours driving around pa and Nj seeing patients. It sucked yesterday. Today is much nicer. Sitting in Reading waiting for my next case now. Yesterday I never stopped for lunch or a break.

I never understood the love affair with cinders in PA. Salt actually melts the ice and washes away. The cinders just sit on top of the ice so you slide on that and then leave mounds of debris when the ice melts away. Growing up in NJ they only used salt.

Salt once diluted from the melting ice will re -freeze once the sun goes down.

Cinders help give to a little traction.
We use a 1 to 1 mix.
It also helps the plow trucks(cinders/grit)when backing up.

You're correct on leaving a mess, especially in storm drains.
We use the grit mostly on our country roads.
Pure salt in sub-divisions.

NJ layed enough salt it looked like Bonneville after a snow storm. Probably why the cars rot so fast. But I see your point. I hate the cinders. They had it so thick on the NE Extension it stripped the paint of the nose of my car. And I have slid with it on the road. I always assumed cost had a big factor in the decision.

Since I can't ride, and now no work for awhile,
some pics to pass the time.
Finished these two before the weather crapped out.
Made the opening a foot smaller.

Small addition

To follow some other jobs.
