Bugger, I can see a piston ring :-( R80GS

I was just about to adjust the valves, so I thought I'd shine the torch through the sparkplug holes. As I admired the the undisturbed hatching on the right side cylinder walls I thought that I might as well check the other side, as that plug had had a bit of oil on the thread.

So I see this....

What will need to be done to fix this?

New Piston?

New Head(s)?

Time to upgrade to more power?

I should have left this until after Christmas.

It's probably the edge of one of the valves.

Oops, I must be the world biggest pessimist . I thought it was a bit of piston ring that had embedded itself in the head. I'll go back down and turn the engine over. Then I better delete this post

heck I've spent hundreds of dollars upgrading so-called 'unreliable' parts on my bike that probably would've lasted 100,000 miles if I had left 'em the hell alone

Anton picked it straightaway it was the valve poking across. I'd just never bothered to shine a light in there before.

of course the one 'unreliable' part that I didn't replace died and left me stranded halfway across Mexico. Ya know, I'd say that pessimism we were talkin' about probably has some merit.
