only took about 25 mins to get down to the 'main road...

on the way there, past a little graveyard..

then came to the 'main rd' (Diamantina Development Rd)

.

it was about 150km west to Bedourie.. my next fuel stop..

the road was..

gravelly in places..... but high speed..

white in places... but high speed..

and even a bit of bitumen for the last 30kms or so... still high speed..

it was warming up already...

never been to Bedourie before.... bugger all here... got some fuel, has a roadhouse feed for breakfast..

and then started the hot 190km run south down the Eyre Developmental Rd to Birdsville...

the road was even whiter down here....

stopped for a rest in some shade at Carcory ruins...

.

.

.

.
the speil...

yep... another hot day...

dont ask me... i just take the pictures...

and then hitting Birdsville..

where i fueled up.. and got more (hugely overpriced) water..

given it had been so hot and i'd been pushing the limits of hydration, a skipped the pub..

and hit the bakery instead..

a reporter from ABC news came in while i was in there doing a story on this sudden heatwave that was breaking a few
records around the place...
she wanted to interview me...
i wasnt too keen (i just wanted an icey-pole) but she really lost me when she said "come on, do it for me.." sorry, who..? what,? piss off..

thats her in the background setting up to interview the baker as i was leaving..

and so goodbye to Birdsville... (too hot to duck out to Big Red..)

hey... nearly home..

so onto the Birdville Track... and into South Australia.. (thats the 'welcome to south Australia' sign up ahead..)

the track was in pretty good condition...

except where it wasnt...

any time i found a tree i made the most of it...

enjoy....

the Walkers Crossing turnoff to Innamincka... the original plan was to come across there from Innamincka...
you know...before fuel pump and detours to noosa etc...

hey another tree...

sigh...

the Warburton Track turnoff out into the Simpson Desert.. (its 40 degrees... i'm not going out there...)

and finally into Mungerannie hotel/Roadhouse..

just in time to get fuel... and a beer and sit in this nice waterhole and relax for a bit...

then hit the pub for a bit... saw this on the wall..

chatting to the owner.. he reconned my best option given it was so hot was to just sleep out on the decking in
front of the motel rooms... it was gonna be a warm night...

so after a feed and a few beers, i rolled out my sleeping bags and layed down for a good nights sleep..

i didnt get one..

almost straight away the mozzies where in... i tried for an hour or so to deal with it.. but it was too hot to mbe covered up...

i grabed my tent off the bike and put a nearby chair in it and climbed in, using it as a mozzie net.. all good...

just dozzed off...

and a massive dust storm blew thru..

this was blowing all my untied gear around and also flopping my 'mozzie net' all over the place..

so up again and put the poles in the tent and tied it to the decking..

shit nights sleep..

where i woke up...

Nice report. Been to a lot of those places you rode through on the same bike as well. Wondering what type of fuel range you get?

And if I known you were in Noosa, I could of come and visit and even loaned you a spare pump if you liked.

cheers,

Rod

G'day Rod...

i get anyware from 280km to 424 kms from the 16.1litre tank...

i normally do my sums on about 21 kms per litre... which gives me a range of a bit over 330kms... only really goes below that if i ramp up the speed and am going into a strong headwind...

best i got was 424kms ploding along dirt roads in WA at prob about 70kms/hr...

sound about the same as yours??

(oh and with jerry cans and a bladder...i made the 770kms between fuel stops needed on my last trip )

cheers!

Welcome back from your epic adventures mate. What a change in the weather in Birdsville, we just came back from there last week and it was lovely about 30 tops in the Simpson I think.
it has been too long we should catch up when you have the time.
Cheers Tony

so got the bike back yesterday... 150-odd kns ride home, and a bit of a stop-start ride around for an hour or 2 today and all seems good..

(another) new fuel pump, and a new set of injectors (courtesy of BMW) fixed the problem...

chain is screaking and groaning and banging now... to be expected i guess, its done 30,000kms...

get that sorted in the next week or so and then i can go for another ride..!

(after i get ride report up-to-date of course...)

so was a bit grumpy the next morning after the crap night... but the weather had cleared up and it also wasnt looking like being anywhere near as hot today...

so south i continued...

stoped here for a photo and check of the bike/gear etc..

and here's me again about an hour later with the bike on the other side of the sign...

pick the difference...?

thats right... that orange thing on top of the red jerry can in the first pic...is missing from the second....

i'd gone about 40kms on after the first pic and stopped in a creek bed for some breakfast...

pretty much every time i stop i have a quick look at spot to make sure the light is still blinking (been caught out once or twice with flat batteries.....)

anyway, this check showed it was gone.....

hmm..

it was there.. back at the Mulka homestead turnoff..

nothing for it but to turn around and see if i could find it..

there were roadworks on the way that had the road down to less than one lane..

i rode back thru again (sth to north.. and got to the homestead sign again (hence the second pic) but no sign of spot..

so headed south again.. and stopped at the roadworks again..

a couple of the fellas strolled over and asked if i really liked this stretch of road that much (third time they'd seen me today...

told em the story and one said that he drives up and down a few times a day and he'd keep and eye out... i gave him my number just in case..

and away i went .. minus spot..

hey! water..! thats novel...

then more 'nothing'..

and finally hitting Marree again...

where i made a couple of calls, sent some texts from the payphone to people expecting spot messages...

rode past the pub where there was 3 big beemers out front... i didnt get to stop because a mongrel dog who sounded pretty hungry came belting out and chased me to the outskirts of town...

onward south with a drink stop here..

.

then back into it..

avoiding plenty of Emu's..

thats Lyndhurst just over that rise... about 800 metre away..

and thats me on the side of the road out of fuel.....

i had plenty of fuel left in the fuel bladder, but wasnt keen on untying everything to get to it..

in the end i just screwed the 6 inch pourer hose on it and squeezed it a little til the hose filled up w fuel.. put my thumb over the end,
unscrewed the hose and dropped 4 inches of fuel in the tank.. did that 3 times and rode into town to the servo and fueled up...

the E-09 dakar..

.

i pulled in to the leigh creek coal fields... a bit before i left, there was speculation that the lookout had been closed..

its true...

.

and onward toward the northern Flinders ranges..

and into Parachilna for the night...again...

.

.

.

.

next day was to be a long one...

south..

.

the world was becoming greener..

on R.M. williams Way..

into Burra for late lunch..

and on thru Peterborough

and onward thru some other small towns...

and into the Riverland... ferry over the Murray river..

thru riverland vineyards...

along the Murray..

more vineyards... with a sky telling me i was indeed heading south into winter...

onward south towards Pinarroo... I wasnt going to quite make it home today... i hit rain about one Kilometer out of Pinaroo, at almost sunset..

great timing to completely cock-up a photo..!

anyway, i got a room at the pub for the night... a feed, some beers..and some real bloody interesting conversations....

next morning bike was still out the back in the shed...

rolled out to the bakery for breakfast..

then continued the 350kms to home in the sunshine..

getting there just after lunch... and a hell of a lot cooler....
