Bloody good read mate.

Bloody good read mate. I grow up near Tiboburra and don't reckon I tackle the ride you did in the heat. Awesome achievement.

thanks Lads...

oh and AusVentureBoy... you might wanna make sure you have plenty of cereal... next instalment is about due..

oh hey... did i mention after spot fell off....i got a call a few days later from the roadwork guy... he'd found spot

he said his boss was coming up in about a week for an inspection, and he'd give it to him... when he got back to Port Augusta he would wack it in the post to me...

so a few weeks later the old girl arrived in the post....

had 3 decent cracks in her... but she seemed to fire up ok...

then i tried activating trackin...and nothing happened...

oh well... given the cracks, she was no longer waterproof so not much good anyway......

ok... while i'm here... lets make a start...

i left early ish from Bendigo.... todays ride was just really a transport section to Adelaide...

back roads but...

fuel at Patchywollock...

and thru the quarantine station near Murrayville.. where i got waved thru past all the queued cars..

made Adelaide in good time... and caught up with some old mates...being tit was a friday night... it was a late one...

no time to sleep-in but.. i had to be in Port Augusta (300kms north) before midday to get some new tyres fitted... i'd lined em up a few weeks earlier..

so hung-over, i punched out 300kms of highway getting to Port Augasta around 11.30...

tyres were fitted (using my tool kit as he didnt have any torx sockets....

then a jerry got some fuel in her.. picked up some water... and headed out the back and up the leigh creek railway line....

It might be harsh,
It might be true,
It certainly is funny BUT.....

I admire your faith (or is it stupidity) in the bike and a willingness to give it another go.

so PhilmeUp and I had come down this road a few years back and it was a cracker..!
so i was pretty happy to be running back up it..

.

.

.

i wound around a bit more this time but...

.

.

i remembered this place... i think it had people in it last time...or they had just moved out...something like that..

shame to see it really falling apart...

.

.

quite a few river/creek beds along the way..

.

.

i had a bit of spare time... so i tought i'd try out a few other tracks to see how far up the railway you could get...

wasnt that far before i was hitting locked gates....

oh well... a little bit of a backtrack...

and then out east..

.

until popping out on the main north/south rd..

for the quick run up to Parachilna...

grabbed a donga there for the night and settled in for a few beers n a feed... oh and some photos..

next morning was fairly overcast... which made a nice change to how bloody hot it normally is when i'm out this way....

north i continued...

i'd popped in to Farina a few times in the past... but i'd never been out the back to the cemetery....

so..

pretty interesting place....

.

from there it was the usual run up to Marree..and a fuel stop..

and then north west out the Oodnadatta track...

.

stopping in at a few random old railway bits...

.

.

.

.

and just randomly stoping...

.

the first 200km really is a bit of a highway....

.

stopped to say g'day to some of the friendly locals...

.

rolled in to Curdimurka for a look...

.

.

.

.

.

.

then into Beresford..

where some dickheads had camped as close as the could to the ruins.. and spoilt everyone elses photos....

rather than camping by the waters edge a few 100 metres away...

..

out on the highway again...past lake eyre south

and into william Creek.. more fuel..

it was getting on... and i'd been thru here a billion times but never stayed the night...

so after sussing out the cost of camping versus a donga... i got a donga, parked the bike.. and unloaded..

watched the sun set..

and headed across the road to the pub for the night...

so after giving it a fair go in the pub, i stumbled back to me donga... cleared me gear of the bed and sat down to get me boots off..

and pretty quickly stood back up again...

bed was soaking wet...

a bit of investigation revealed a failed 3 litre water bladder in my backpack....

that went in the bin quick smart..

and i slept sideways up the top of the bed...

next morning was back out with the flies to continue west along the track...

thru roadworks...

and stopping in at plenty of old railway stuff...

.

.

.

.

the "track"..

more evidence of times past...

.

another stop in at Algebuckina...

the spiel...

the dryness..

had been thru here a few times... and knew there was a 'campground' here somewhere... had never found it (never really looked ..)

anyway...had a little look and found it...

and then on into that wonderfull establishment... the pink roadhouse... for fuel and a feed...
(yes thats right, the burger without the chips is the same price as the burger and chips..)

anyway...

west some more....

the turnoff to the north, Dalhouisie, Mt dare etc....

and me still going west... had never done the stretch from the Mt Dare turnoff to Marla on the bike before
(did it in a volkswagen beetle in 1997... )

anyway... its still good.. but the 'worst' if you like of the 3 sections...

oh and there is no old railway line in this section either.. so 'things' along the way are a lot scarce-er..

anyway i made good time to Marla where the track hits the highway..

had a look at the map...

had a bit of time..

the local copper pulled in for fuel, and i had a chat...

asked about permits to go out to Mintabie.. 'read somewhere i get one from the local cop-shop..?'

'yeah thats right... but i'm out on rounds now and wont be back in the office till tomorrow..'

'oh..' i said..

'what you thinking of going out there tonight..?' he asks..

'well yeah..'

'oh well off ya go... just tell em at the pub that you spoke to the copper and its ok..'

out to Mintabie.....

as expected... wierd bloody place...

.

the place had been in the news a bit over the years as the government was gonna stop paying for the diesel to run the generator to power the place.. (something like that..)

stopped at the pub and had a chat... oh and a beer..

seems the place wont be around too much longer...

its smack bang in the middle of aboriginal land..

the aboriginals are not allowed at the pub..

the pub is on aboriginal land and leased from the aboriginal land council..

the aboriginal land council doesnt want the pub there..

so it seems that when the lease is up it wont be renewed and the pub will be demolished..

the theory it that when the pubs gone, the miners will bugger off too..

i bought a stubbie holder... figured they'd be rare one day...

the pub in the background.. didnt take one closer as its one of those odd...dont feel right takin photos here sort of places....

so took the photo, let the clutch out and buggered off...

.

got back to Marla.. time was getting on a bit..

asked how much a room at the roadhouse motel was...

coughed n spluttered when they told me..

looked at the map... thought yeah... i've got enough fuel still to get down to Cadney Park.. and just enough light..

so punched out the 85 kms of highway south to Cadney Park..

rolled in to the servo....to discover they were out of fuel....

owner swore and carried on about fuel companies... and didnt know when he'd have more fuel...

hmmm... that really meant a run back up the highway to Marla (170kms of highway)..

asked how much i needed... and after a bit of map crunching i decided 5 ltres...

(yeah i know... the option is to ride 170kms to get 5 litres of fuel....)

anyway... he said his cleaner had gone down to coober pedy and would be back late tonight and he'd put all his jerry cans in the back of her car to fill up...
so i could get 5 litres in the morning..

so i bought tea, some beers and a cheap room for the night...

next morning i moseyed back over to the roadhouse to find the boss.. he wasnt around..

had some breakfast..then found him..

he disapeared for what seemed like forever but eventually came back with a jerry can of fuel..

i fueled up, and was..... well.. you know..

my route today was to take me east from Cadney Park (on the Sturt Highway) east past Mount Willooughby homestead and Arkckaringa and out into the Painted Desert...

around Copper Hills..

.

perfect riding weather today..

.

plenty of dry creeks/rivers to negotiate..

and lots of big rocks that make your bike look small....

with some magic stretches thrown in..

in to Arckaringa Station..

the road had been graded recently... and was a blast... quite hilly in places too..

more gravelly rivers...

and more awesome road....

.

look at that road..!

.

clouds were behaving for me today too...

.

.
and finally into the Painted Desert..

.

.
bloody flies...

.

.

and onward to another lookout point...

.

.

.

then it was backtrack a little bit and south down towards Mt Barry..

another Homestead...

and more high speed dirt...

and then....hmmm decisions..

a check of the map...

and were sorted....

south down the track towards Coober Pedy..

real wasteland out here.... and bloody soft if you leave the track....

and then hit the bitumen as i rolled into Coober Pedy..

plan was to stay the night... but after getting some lunch and riding around a bit... the place didnt float my boat....

so i hit the pub for a beer n map session...

and sctratched 'tomorrows' route..... and decided to gun it south some more...

first some pics about town...

.

.

.

and then out of town...

then it was a pretty dull 200km run down the Stuart highway...

getting late in the day, after 200km of bitumen... i turned right....

someone had beaten the crap out of the automated 'road closed' sign.... i guess if it cant change to
'closed' you cant be fined for being on a 'closed' road...

as you can see from the shadows... the day was getting on... and i was headed south... and it was pretty corrogated...

with the last 5 or 10 kms coping a nice dusting of sand..

and then... right on beer o'clock... i found myself at the Kingoonya Pub

i grabbed a beer and watched a train rolling west.....

front the front verandah that is...

then said... this'll do... ordered a feed, grabbed a room.. and sat down with the 4 new owners, a couple of
workers from nearby stations.... and drank too much till too late..

great little pub... go there....!
