Many think the Badger is a cooler maritime experience.

Considered going around the north side of Lake Michigan . . . or even going into Canada around Lake Huron?

Edit: Being a railroad man, you might enjoy the Badger more. It is an old coal fired railroad car ferry. Years ago some railroads suffered constraints trying to get their trains through Chicago so they moved their priority loads via ferries like the Badger.
Thanks. I actually ran steam engines in Durango Co before moviing to Alaska. I may just have to cheack that out.

p.s. What's wrong with Chicago?
Going to see how the weather is. I may just do it that way. Nothing "wrong" with Chi-town just not what Im looking for this trip.

A lot of cabin fever already.

This is just the second leg of a 14K from AK to NY down to FL across to CA and back up to Seattle.

Check it out here if you care to.

Thanks I'll look at it.

If your a train guy then you might want to stop in Sault Ste. Marie Ont. and ride the Agawa Canyon train. From what I've heard its a beauty of a trip. The cog railroad on Mt. Washington N.H. will blow your hair back too.

Looks like a great trip, read your other post....now it makes sense

Good time to stop by Aerostitch in Duluth then loop the lakes in Canada.

Cabin fever bad here...Chomping at the bits for Copper Canyon this spring break and Mexico/Central America this summer. Want to make the trip to Alaska one day, but right now that doesn't sound real good

Checking out an old steamer is one thing. Getting on a train and riding it is not what I have planned for my vacation. Too much like work.

Appreciate the thought though.

Those kind of stops have the potential to get very expensive.

I came back to AK last spring from PA via VA on a 12GS. Avoided ALL toll roads and most freeways. I came up through MI to the UP, then followed Hwy 2 over the top of WI to Duluth. Made a side trip to visit relatives in Ely, then caught Hwy 2 again to Minot ND before heading up to Canada and home.

Funny thing, I live a few miles down the road from you but I'm sitting in Mpls. now, having taken delivery of my first Duc which I just tucked in for the winter.

The road over WI and the UP is very pleasant and easygoing. Speeds are a little low, but the one who clocked me in MI about 20 over let me off with a caution and a pleasant chat. If you have the time, take a look at going up to Duluth, Thunder Bay and through Canada if you're headed to NY. I will be picking up a V-Strom in Boston in late May and am pondering my route to MN where I'll leave the bike. Like to spend a few days in New England just wandering. PM if you want to meet up for a beer in Anchortown and look at some maps.

Agreed on going up and over the bridge - route 2 across the UP is a great road. A stop at Aerostitch in Deluth a good call as well. Here's the ladywife and I going over the bridge in August on our round about way to South Dakota:

Sounds like this is what I'll do. I'll make the ferry an option depending on how I feel when I get there.

Thanks for the responses everybody.
