The Pensacola Hooligan Year in Review

Man. What a year!

I was sitting here going thru pics of the past year and started getting all nostalgic 'n shit, something I'm increasingly prone to do in my rapidly advancing old age, and realized it's high time to celebrate the Good Times of '09 with a pictorial review. These are some of my best memories of 2009, and I'll cherish them until I die or senility robs them from me, whichever comes first.

Here's to you, Hooligans! It's been an honor and a pleasure to know and ride with you all, and I hope for many more adventures with you gazoonies in the years to come.

We started the year off right with a New Year's ride:

But all didn't go quite as planned. Hooli McGee busted his foot at the end of the day, and spent several weeks in a cast as a result. Major bummer:

JP and I attended Tour de Appalachicola in January, pretty good turnout:

We did some riding around the Tate's Hell area, led by Hurricane. Lotsa fun, and some deep water crossings:

The obligatory Group Shot.

We got together for some local brush-bashing on one chilly afternoon, ya know it's cold when JP breaks out the facemask.

We did a little bit of riding, and a whole lotta BS'ing...

The Three DR650 Amigos got together and had themselves an epic ride:

There was a water crossing or two, I'm told:

A shot of our very own "Relaxation Canyon" in Blackwater State Forest.

As the year progressed, we started noticing a peculiar trend. More ORANGE bikes started showing up:

Leading to a lot more of this:

And a little bit of this:

I keed, I keed! Seriously, those orange bikes are fast. I can't keep up with 'em. Onboard footage courtesy of frothingslosh:

Mug joined the DR350 Cult:

I wanted to join the KDX220 Cult after riding Buzz's bike (the BEST woods bike I've ever ridden), which was stolen not long after this pic was taken. I'm as pissed off about it as Buzz is :

Phaedrus gave his XT a makeover:

And showed us how to do a custom bend on handlebars. This is the "Phaedrus Bend," real popular in these parts:

Mug made it past break-in mileage on his 11GS:

Luke rejoined us after his foot healed up some. This is the "RearView DR650 Cane Mount," not available in the Touratech catalog:

We did a camping trip at Escribano Point. There were a couple small mudpuddles, as I recall. Mug enjoyed every one:

Lane kicked it up a notch and brought the ADV Boat :

Escribano Point. What a beautiful place. Best campsite in all of Florida, I think.

We did some scouting around Blackwater State Forest in preparation for Sweatfest II. I was trying to relive my childhood on a KE100, which was great fun back when I was 12. Childhood nostalgia FAIL.

Don't worry, there's MORE TO COME

Are you sure about that... I thought I saw it on page 3679 on the lower right hand corner. It's hard to read the small print but it's there.

BTW, I'm looking forward to riding with you FFs some more.

Maybe a "Hotshoe part deux" is in order. This time, maybe all you FFs that were on the fence on this one at SFII, can ride the route.

this year - being a total NooB - I remembered that you should go as fast as you can through the river so that you and your jeans and tennis shoes are nice and dry for the rest of the ride...

Been there, done that

Hope to see you on lots of our adventures in the upcoming year, Pete!

This year - I got my fizzer-riding friend to buy a slightly used high-spec Austrian-made titanium and unobtanium katoom. Is that something friends do?

He said (after a week or so) "I think there is something broke in the back side - it probably needs a tack weld somewhere".

He has had fun doing some wheelies and fake trials rides on his spread. He has rode it to work at UWF a few times too...

Now about that carburetor...

Before this year, I decided that "Jaws" was just too freakin' much... 110mph is 110mph -- whether on a big ass scooter or some scary 1000cc Paris to Dakkar wannabe. (but 140 was novel)

Jaws was a neat-o rig...

And then there was Sweatfest

We had a good time scoping out Blackwater State Forest in preparation for Sweatfest II. Careful mapping of the subsurface terrain was critical for successful navigation of the many mudholes. Here we see 2 Mudhole Technical Analysts in action. The one getting wet: "Now this right here is a mudhole. That I'm standing in." The one staying dry: "No shit?"

This is something I've never seen before, Madhouse's bike with the wheels pointing straight up:

Madhouse seriously hooked us up with a prime location for the shindig in Holt, FL. To show our appreciation, we made sure he got plenty to eat:

Buzztail brought his 200EXC "Camp Whore," and everybody got a ride:

Rumor has it that there was some deep water in the area. No problem for Joey, 'cuz he's a Submarine Skipper.

Forrestrider brought his super-duper ADV Food Preparation Rig and did some professional-quality cooking.

And not only that, he told stories that made me cry. Here he is talking about a Monkey with an Ear Fetish:

The stories went all night and well into the next night...

Mini's head asploded because he couldn't get ready for the ride in 15 MINUTES. This was a historically significant head explosion, the likes of which is rarely seen even in ADV-land, and I'm glad I witnessed it. We'll still be talking about it years from now.

JP brought his tire groover and went to work. You ever seen anybody carve up a worn-out TKC80 with a tire groover? I have.

JP has also been known to do a "popawheelie," even though we generally frown on such unsafe and irresponsible behavior:

After all the tire-grooving, Kevin's 990 was ready for some mud:

Buzz brought his RedMax chainsaw, and explained to Mug how it sounds. No shit.

These people are plain and simply no damn good. They wanted to charge me a FEE for posing for this picture. How effed up is that? Buncha scallywags, I'm tellin ya.

Don't turn yer back on yer gear when they're around. The ones who haven't been neutered like to spray. Something to do with "marking their territory."

On Saturday, the Jenkem Baron hisself showed up. How many people can make a KLR650 look like a minibike?

This right here is a limited-edition Jenkem Sticker. Only one of its kind in existence. It's a lonely path, ya know.

Late in the summer we got a big (for us) group of 9 riders together for what would henceforth be known simply as the "Floatie Dude Ride."

zuludude showed up with his limited-edition VOR. Trailer? He don't need no steenkin' trailer...

Richard showed up with his DRZ supermoto. With slicks mounted.(!)

You ever seen anybody ride a supermoto offroad with slicks? And have a good time doing it? And NOT bust their ass? I have.

During the ride, we encountered Floatie Dude hisself, who was hopelessly lost and disoriented. I gave him a ride out, 'cuz I need all the Good Karma Points I can get. Much laughter ensued. Floatie Dude has now passed into Pensacola Hooligan Legend...

STAY TUNED, MORE LATER--
