What a long strange trip it's been

The day after Thanksgiving we had ourselves a big ride. Our First Annual Turkey Trot was a huge success, as you might expect considering we had a strong turnout of local gazoonies, superb weather, and a few hundred thousand acres to ride. What's not to like, says Madhouse.

Of course we had to go check out the Hueys, and of course they were a hit.

Nothing like a crashed Huey to bring out the kid in us all.

Checking our ADV geocache.

Sometimes life hands you a perfect day for a ride. And you have the day off work. And you have a bike that's ready to ride. On those days especially, life is good.

And then there was "Next Fest" in the Appalachicola National Forest. As had been predicted by various naysayers, it was the third worst weekend in the history of...well, history. Mini, Mug, and I rode over from P-cola on Mug's Most Excellent 50/50 Route. Of course we stopped at the Hueys 'cuz Mini hadn't seen them yet. Here he is having himself a Rambo fantasy:

Buzztail saved the day by bringing the firewood. And 65 gallons of water.

Buzz brought his "learner bike," and let a homeless guy ride it. That'll learn him.

There was some drooling over Bob's new Husky. If I was a man of Bob's means, I'd have a Husky too:

Eloy brought his CrotchToggs:

Oscar showed us how they chop wood in The Old Country.

We spent lotsa quality time around the firepit. As Mini so eloquently put it, "there was a hunter, a captain, warm beer, an MRE and a rock or something involved."

An excerpt from The Buzztail Archives should be sufficient to explain the next four pictures:

There was a quiet moment around the fire in the wee hours that a confession was made..... it alone was worth braving the third worst weather in the history of motorcycling.

There was a moment at lunch that someone became enlightened.

That was worth the ride through impassable roads, in high gear, with one hand on my hip, watching Tom step the KLR out around every corner.

There was a moment while laying in my tent listening to the sound of wood being split, the crackle of a fire, and what may have been small arms fire...

JP got popped in the eye with some barbed wire (!!) and decided not to go see the doctor. "No pain, no gain," sez JP:

After a couple hours' worth of sitting around the fire holding a rag to his eye, JP announced he was good to go. No shit.

There was plenty of riding, and a mudhole or two.

No hill for a climber.

This calls for a break!

This was one of the trickiest sections, submerged roots hidden in muddy water makes for some challenging riding:

When we finally got to dry land, I told Eloy that was some of the toughest riding I'd ever done in my life. Eloy just laughed at me.

More good times around the fire, which was constantly turning a corner:

The food contributions were beyond belief. There were burgers, steaks, sausages, and Kim's homemade cornbread. YUM:

Eloy proved himself to be the ADV Iron Chef at this event, with beef stew and dump cake cooked up the old-fashioned way:

All in all, a great time was had by everybody (except ShortDistanceHunter, who really doesn't count anyway), despite the predictions of dire calamity.

Lots of seam sealer was produced:

Man I'm starting to think SDH is right--these ADV events really suck. I don't think I'm ever going on another one!

Y'all have a Happy New Year!

No shower curtins were harmed in the making of this thread, but there were stories about harming them

The Inept One hit most of the 2009 highlights (do i get royalties for all those pix? Needs the FEE, folks )

Here's some he missed:

January, relaxing w/ me bruddahs near OLF Choctaw. This is about an hour before Luke broke his hoof on the dastardly newly-paved Kelly Mill Road

Mid-April we had the Escribano Point-Fest. Damn good time and damn good food (as usual), and Lane landed himself a spot in the Mug Hall of Fame by driving the ADV boat through the bay from Pensacola.

This was the last time we Hooligans would ride w/ Luke until September

Some realizations were made in 2009...

Although i was the only Hooligan representing, the Osceola gig in late April with Eloy, Bob, Jerry and Kim, Kelly, and of course Scott was a blast

In early June we held Sweatfest II at a truly grand location near the Blackwater SF land.

The pre-riding/scouting in May was waaay fun times

This was a kickass gathering, my favorite of the year

I love to ride of course, but nearly as cool is seeing friends load plates of good grub up

Real men hold hands, when a copperhead is in the area

a week after Sweatfest II Kevin, Robin and i welcomed fellow ADVer Krabill from Oklahoma to the beach. He was here on biz and we had a good dinner and beers goofing at the soundside talking bikes, inflatable Ronald McDonalds, waitresses, etc

In August an impromptu evening ride at Hutton Unit brings out 9 riders.

Yes, Virginia/Bob, there really is a Floatie Dude

a legend in his own time. I'm guessing Floatie won't be near the river again for about 10 years or so

In the last week of September, Buzz's much-labored 'Pre-Fest' happened at Moore Lake in the north edge of the ANF, near the TLH airport

There were lots of good ideas

and a shitload of bikes

my gal Ride This showed up w/ her Squirrels and their rolling-luggage Bar and pretty much trashed the joint. Made drinking out of a dog-bowl a true pleasure

Eloy tries to comprehend the need for 'Manscaping', while lovingly evil Squirrel Leigh laughs on:

Good times, with a bunch of new folks

Later in the Fall, Inept (can't hide money ) sluffed off the corporate binds once and for all...

and went-a-traveling

back to VA homelands.

Inept found a sight he did'nt want to: his childhood Tree consigned to the Ages

shortly after his return from kissing Corporate America goodbye, we had to bid farewell to his uber-Hooligan pup Charlie Dog

In the sad weeks that followed we got out and found new stuff at EG

Inept says that wheelies are dangerous and downright stupid. Possibly un-American if you're a law-abider

I don't know who this is, but he's got good style

As much as Inept hates squids who wheelie with abandon, somehow he's always eager to show how its done...

Yes, the Hueys discovery was way cool and brought out the kid in all of us

the Mug Mystery Crater is always cool

In early November short-lived Hurricane Ida gave the panhandle a scare, enough to close local schools and the University. Inept and i scored on that angle , getting out in the early wind bands to do some considerable trespassing on horse trails and private land near the state line. LEO's are not to be seen in the woods when there's a hurricane coming in, so strike while the iron's hot, even if it means a soaking

Few weeks later the weather is perfect for Vic's first annual day-after Thanksgiving Hooligan Turkey Trot

A week later and we're all headed to Cliff Lake for Winter ANF II. The rain gaugers swore we'ed all drown/freeze/choke on our own vomit etc in the worst weather since the Mayan Calendar was invented

Somehow we had a damned good time, even without Sccaauugght, who was sorely missed

Here, Dick's had enough, even as Inept challenges Eloy to go back in for a 5$ bill he dropped

Dust...Wind...Dude where's our food!?!?

Thanks for memories, ADV family. You FF's always have something to look forward to. I/we will pay back at Sweatfest III

And 2009 is not finished yet, troops. There's still an MU13-B adventure this week, likely leaving out Monday AM. Get w/ Inept and me if you're interested

There are some truely outstanding pics here. The helicopter at sunset is fantastic and captures what ADV and Eglin are all about.

Thanks for the memories....

Let make a bunch more in 2010.

It's been an honor meeting and riding with all of you. I wish I could have attended every ride. It's gonna be hard, but let's make 2010 even better.

It uncanny how much truth there is to this statement!

Makes you wonder why there are so many of the damned things

It has to be that the pleasure is worth the pain.
Wish I knew(or at least wanted to know) how to work on-em.
I'd most certainly own one.
