I won't change anything then

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys, will try to put up the next leg tomorrow, but as it's the first proper workday in 2 weeks tomorrow, I can only dream of leaving work at a normal hour.

Day 05 - 30/7-09
420 km - Total milage: 1900 km
Åndalsnes - Verdal

Trollveggen.com

Today was the day.
Sounds like I'd been dreaming of this for years

First thing first - packing the bikes and washing out the cabin

P: Lars

Our plan for the day was to make our way north toward Trondheim via the Atlantic Ocean Road (E to F on the map)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanterhavsveien

The Atlantic Coast Road is here [GPS: 63° 1′ 12″ N, 7° 20′ 24″ E]

We have a friend, JP, who used to drive tourists around Norway in a bigass bus. He warned us before we left that the Atlantic Ocean Road wasn't much to see. I said that I was really only interested in seeing that bridge to which he replied something to the effect of "Well, you're in luck 'cause that bridge pretty much is the Atlantic Ocean Road......"

Could it really be that bad ?

P: Lars

Looking at the map it isn't very long.....

We set off

People were fishing from the bridges.

P: Lars

There is a problem with visitors fishing too much and there are laws to prevent overfishing, but there are still examples each year of tourists getting caught at the border with 4-500 kg of fish on board their motorhome.

We stopped to take photos of the bridge. The place is very picturesque, but it really is little more than just that one bridge unfortunately.

P: Lars

Picture taken after crossing the bridge looking back

So with that inspirational monument in ruins we looked towards new possibilities. A few cold, dark, not to mention dirty tunnells and a ferry ride later we were heading north-east toward spiritual enlightenment* and sore asses**....

* further down
** tomorrow

P: Lars

On the way we had to pay to ride on a toll road which is a new thing to me (MC are usually free on tollroads in Norway) and we found an awsome place to cook some lunch

P: Lars

P: Lars

The plan all along after the Atlantic Coast Road had been to ride the shortest way all the way north to the very top of Europe and collect pictures and impressions on the way back down (more on that tomorrow).

Therefore we avoided Trondheim City and followed E6 north

We were now getting close to northern Norway

P: Lars

It was getting late and when we arrived in Verdal we found a place to set up camp.

As far as I can recall the time of our arrival in Verdal was around 7pm and we found we had a huge lawn all to ourselves. Most excellent ! We pitched our tents and started dinner.

We had a great time, shooting the breeze with a couple of Dutch guys on pushbikes and a Polish girl on an 800GS and was looking forward to a nice evening.

P: Lars

Then a car and a mini bus parked nearby us and started unpacking

And I saw their bright yellow t-shirts with black print

Minister - church of scientology....

They came over and said hello (all of them at once, which was a bit intimidating), but they must have figured out we were not what they were looking for 'cause they kept their distance after that.
(This is really a secret so don't tell anyone; I said over and over again in my head These aren't the weak sould you're looking for, move along... - and it worked !

We went to bed fairly early as it started raining.... honestly there are few sounds that are more comforting than rain drumming on a tent.

So now we were here

I have just posted the day we rode it.
Whilst I wouldn't call it bad by any means, it certainly left me somewhat underwhelmed.
That was partly down to the sea fog I'm sure, but even so it wasn't the ride I was thinking it would be....

a good trip

you are on so far. i stopped at Andlesnes for 2 nights and rode up over the trollstigen one day, and down around Geiranger. so rode the opposite direction to you as i was heading south. the ferry from Geiranger along the fjord is stunning with all the waterfalls.

i didnt mind catching ferries at all, it was a break from riding, a chance to eat, and take in the amazing views.

Those are some beautiful photos. I traveled in Norway with my father when I was a teenager, and would love to go back and ride there sometime, see that landscape and visit my family there again. Thanks for sharing your pictures and story!

Yeah, that's a better word; underwhelmed. My thoughts exactly.

I don't mind riding the ferries either, hope I didn't give that impression. I hate to pay though
