Steep and Rocky's Death Valley Trip

Early in the morning the day after Christmas we leave Pendleton for our winter vacation ride. This year we are going to Death Valley. Our first stop just after daybreak is in Baker City.

It is cold, but the roads are mostly bare, so we make good time. Our next stop where we take any pictures is a little north of Ely NV.

Somewhere between Ely and Tonopah it get dark and also gets fairly cold.

We spend the night in Tonopah at this motel.

This morning we head towards Death Valley. We plan to visit Scotty's Castle. On the way in near the park border, we come accross this recent accident.

The accident had just happened a few minutes before we came along. They had a blowout and lost control and rolled this car. Neither was real seriously hurt, but were both shaken up and the husband had been hit on the head fairly hard. There was no cell reception there, so we took the wife back towards the main highway to get assistance, but soon got cell coverage and were able to call for assistance before going very far. With help on the way and things under control, we were able to continue on to Scotty's Castle.

Reach the park border.

Reach Scotty's Castle.

Took both the tour of the underground and the main house. Will only post a few of the many pictures we took.

Utility tunnel under the castle

Bank of batteries from the original power system.

Water turbine powered generator that supplied power for many years.

We then took the tour of the main house.

Death Valley Scotty on the left and the real builder/owner of the castle, Albert Johnson on the right.

After leaving the castle,we drive though the northern edge of Death Valley and then up to Beatty NV and check into the motel that will be our home for the rest of the week.

We get the bikes unloaded. Have just enough time for a short ride.

We ride to the nearby ghost town of Rhyolite.

We find a dirt route that takes us most of the way back to Beatty.

Back on the highway, almost back to Beatty.

Tomorrow we plan to start off by riding Titus canyon. From there, ????

Will try to post a ride report each night from the motel. Should be a good week of riding.

Stay tuned for each days report.

I'm all ears!
Growing up in Vegas I've checked out many of those places... many years ago.

Respect the roads out there! The GF & I nearly got killed 30 miles outside of Ely.
Spent two weeks in the Ely hospital in April of '08. A inattentive farmer nailed us.
I won't show pictures.

Do enjoy DV!

Seeing the picture of the Clown Inn made me smile. I past it a few years ago on my way home from Baja, it caught my attention and I thought it would be a fun place to stay. I like the clown on the motorcycle.

That accident looked ugly, it's good the people didn't get hurt.

I love Death Valley and really need to go back and spend some time there but until then I'll enjoy your ride report.

Probably but we're to busy riding to watch movies.

Hi everyone We're going to try to find Manson's hideout tomorrow. I think there was a movie made about that place. Hopefully we don't run around helter skelter
