I think I forgot to post this picture in this thread. This is the bike pre-tear down:

Yes, you can fit the /5 tanks to the /6 if the Master Cyl is moved to the bars but all of the /6 bikes had the under tank master Cyl, except for the Europe only R50s and the R60. Those still ran the drum front brake.

If you use a handle bar master and the under tank splitter, you'll find the splitter to be a close fit under the /6 tank. Mine rubs a little, so I'm going to try moving it a tad and if that doesn't cure it, I'll shave the mount. As a matter of fact, I'll probably do both.

Heres the splitter:

The later tanks that accommodate the MC actually began appearing during the last year of the /5, so those variations are out there somewhere. I'd love to find a Toaster Tank with the cut out!

And Blain:

Sorry not to communicate better but my gauge combo for the foreseeable future will be the R90S speedo in it's normal spot, teamed up with a later model Airhead electronic tach. I have to go electronic on the tach because this 79 engine doesn't have the tachometer drive and I have no desire to swap in all of the crap necessary to go retro. Luckily, spokes has agreed to swap the electronic face to my R90S face and that'll be good enough until a gauge fails. Then I'll go electronic.

If I decided to go completely electronic, I'd look at one of these. At least its round!

Oh... And since your bike isn't assembled yet, I want to very respectfully suggest that you do what I did and swap the stock swing arm for the later "Big Tube" model and then reinstall your solid drive shaft (Or not. I went cush.) That later swing arm really gives a huge improvement in handling and nobodies really gonna notice cept us!

hehe, I know exactly what you are talking about but unfortunately I waited too late for that improvement. The swing arm was powder coated and re-installed already. I've actually done some assembly of the bike already, just haven't cleaned up the photos and posted them yet.

Thanks for the kind words and advice guys! No real update (still bugging the shop about getting my parts done.)
So some more images from Deals Gap this past weekend. Yeah, I have 2 r90's

This is the crew going on the Grand Canyon/Bonneville trip coming up: (Brother, Father, Friend, Me)

All the bikes going, minus the Harley (that will be a 2008 Bonneville I believe)

Left to right: Brother, Jay, Me, Dad

(no, I don't really have a 2nd r90. I just borrowed a friend's)

Great thread! Not sure of your route to the Grand Canyon, but if you swing through Tucson, let me know.

So I bought a bitsa bike k100 (engine only has 4k miles on it) last night and I already hate it. Anyone want to buy it? :)

Right after I bought it, I received an email with more updates on the r90 parts:

Oooo ... you bought that K100 with 165K on the odo, and 4K on the 'rebuilt' engine? That wasn't Nathan's was it?

Anyway ... for the price it wasn't a bad deal ... but between you and me I'm more of an R guy too ;-)

Parts lookin' good Blaine!

Nah, it wasn't Nathan but that is the bike indeed. Pretty nice bike, well done...but I discovered real quick that K bikes arn't for me. I'm way too small for the bike, I don't need that much speed, it's not very nimble etc etc. Not to mention I named it Jeff Bridges because it looks like a Tron bike.
I re-posted it on CL, I guess that looks sketchy but owell. If someone is really interested, it's a legit deal.

The story on the engine was that it was stolen in 1985, impounded from the cops and sat in a ware house since then. So the engine really only has 4k on it, but the rest of the bike has more.

Still finding random pics from the tear down. Wishing I was taking pics of the building right now, and working with my Dad!

Looking Good

Great thread. I've wanted to restore an R90s for a while now. Looks like you're doing it right.

I see you had the tranny open, what all did you do to it besides replacing that rear main seal?

Damn shame that pornographically clean cast alloy tranny case won't stay pristine for very long once you get the bike back on the road.

Once you finish your project you plan on selling your "daily driver" R90s or gonna hold onto it?

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Thanks Lesser!
As far as the tranny, the cause of the shavings was a failed bearing so it was opened for a replacement of that bearing, re-shim and reseal. I think he mentioned updating a few more things in it as well to further bullet proof it :)
I guarantee that casing wont stay clean too long. I will be riding the r90 daily and definitely throwing some meaty tires on it for back road trails. I'll maintain it to the best of my ability though!

I'm restoring this bike with plans to have it for as long as I exist, or to pass on to my kids way down the road. This was my dream bike, otherwise I wouldn't be dumping so much time/effort/money into a project.

nice work Blaine,
is this your workshop or is it the guy's who is doing your hired out stuff?

About your gearbox- are you doing anything to improve/strengthen the 'weakeness'/'problems' of the 74 gearbox, especially the kickstarter?
My 74 has a later non-kick 5 speed on it, but for the project bike I have the original 5 speed kicker and another later 5 speed non-kicker to choose from.
I'll be opening whichever I choose up, to make sure it is OK- but as this project bike will be a bit of GS thing I wouldn't mind having the kicstarter box if I can improve the kicker mechanism, and other issues, a little.

Oh yeah- and have you found out what media your stuff is getting blasted with yet?
Good luck, can't wait to see her come back together.

P.S. Nice wheels. Stainless spokes? The previous owner on mine did the bizarre thing of getting stainless spokes on the front wheel but didn't(apparantly) take the opportunity to get the hub, let alone the rim, polished/blasted at the same time.
