Family friendly Houston/Austin Beer, Coffee, BBQ

Looking for some suggestions....

We'll be in Houston & Austin for a week starting tomorrow. We have a wedding in Houston this weekend, then its off to Austin for a few days. I'll be with the family.

When traveling, not necessarily in order of importance, we are looking for beer & Coffee. In this case, we have a 9 & 4 yr old in tow, so any family friendly activities we're all ears.

Is there anything interesting between Houston & Austin that we should check out?

Texas means Barbecue, and that is what we'll be looking for! Is Gatlins really worth it? Where else?

I'd suggest stopping in Brenham and taking the tour of the Blue Bell Ice Cream plant. The kids will enjoy it.

Continue on to Lexington, and stop in at Snow's BBQ.

Austin is only about an hour away.

Here is the route:

Another option would be to take IH-10 to Columbus, then take State Hwy 71 to Austin. Stop Hruzka's in Ellinger for kolaches.

Drive to Smithville and enter the Buescher State Park. Drive the winding Park Road to Bastrop State Park. This is the site of the massive wildfire of Labor Day, 2011. The forest is slowly recovering.

Plenty of outdoor stuff to enjoy with the kids.

I would also highly recommend Barton Springs at Zilker Park right south of downtown Austin. 68 degree crystal clear spring fed swimming hole. You will enjoy it with the heat of Texas bearing down on you. I would also suggest a ride SW of Austin to a classic Texas BBQ joint, called the Salt Lick BBQ. In town of Austin try Franklins BBQ, long wait but great BBQ. Of the two, I like SL better. Who wants to wait an hour in Texas heat to eat BBQ, not this Texan.

+1 on Bluebell Tour
+1 on Salt Lick (if you want to drink beer it's BYOB)
