Another stop down/up a really nice back road.

These are the remains of an old iron furnace called Clinton Ironworks off of Clinton Road.

Sorry it is a little hard to see through the trees.

One of the riders was looking for a way to ride, yes, RIDE, down there.

He yells out, I think we can make it down here PC!

I yelled back, That's OK, I'm good !

It is hard to tell from the pictures so let me put it this way,
the top of that furnace is below the road level,
and the furnace is about three stories high,
and all I saw were trees on an almost invisible incline from the road sort of going towards the furnace.

Now if I had a dirt bike !

I know you can get down there because some of our riders had posted pictures of their bikes next to the furnace way down there.

I could not find much more information online except what is on the sign here.

This is looking from a side road back to our bikes and the furnace is down over the hill on the other side of the road where the guys are standing.

This is looking over the bridge you can see to the left in the above picture.

I had heard water running so I went to check it out.
I could not see much because of the foliage.
There is apparently a water fall down there somewhere.

If you scroll down to the third falls on New Jersey Waterfalls (Passaic County) they have pictures of the falls from below.

Here are some closer pictures of the furnace from Waymarking.

And leave it to WeirdNJ to have a weird story about Clinton Road that we were on.

The only thing we saw was road barriers that were put up because a bridge was out just up the road from here.

I never really expected this big of a town up here in the woods,
but West Milford is a decent sized town.
They even have this funny florist sign.

West Milford Florist
Established in 1950.

The gentleman here is the one who tagged that large white Champagne Bottle in New Gretna I posted earlier.

He is also the rider who, one month before this ride, had his bike totaled while playing the Tag-O-Rama game.
This is his new bike.

So it looks like a bunch of old telephone poles !

That's what it is !

It use to be Jungle Habitat.

A safari drive-thru in West Milford, NJ created by Warner Brothers.

It did not last long, as it opened in the summer of 1972 and closed in October 1976.

I can understand why, there is nothing in this area for the most part.
You kind of need people to come to your place to keep it open.

Interesting web site with good pictures from when this place was open.

All of your great PC pictures are inspiring me to take more photos of my PC when I go out riding! I can't seem to find any tag-o-ramas going on out in Oregon. Too bad. It looks like a lot of fun and a great way to learn about a state.

Start one !

You will be the first tagger.

Even if you only start out with a few people you will eventually get more people involved as they find out about it.

I'd love to see some of those pictures too !

EDIT:
Everyone pretty much uses the same rules, so just copy one of them and start a thread and see what happens.
Here is the Garden State Tag-O-Rama rules on the first post.
Check out a few other TOR's also.

Now back to your unregularly scheduled PC pictures.

I, and I think everyone else, was looking forward to this next stop.

The plane (for us non-aviators) is a 1946 Lockheed Constellation N9412H.

This is just up the hill from the old Jungle Habitat gate.
I could see the airport when we turned off for Jungle Habitat.
This airport even had planes painted to look like animals when Jungle Habitat opened and the airport was named Nairobi Airport. (scroll to bottom of link for pictures).

The official name of the airport is Greenwood Lake Airport.
(Great pictures on this link and some great old ones under their history)

The plane has the title of "Champagne Lady".
Also known as "The New Jersey Connie".
Connie was apparently the nickname used for these Constellation aircraft.

This was supposed to be used as a restaurant, but that did not work out.
They have tried several other things with it, but non seem to have caught on.

The gentleman who tagged this aircraft used a 1976 MV Augusta 750 America "S" and it looked terrific next to this old aircraft.
See pictures here.

This man was a flight instructor and as his plane took off from this airport it had engine problems and crashed here killing him and his passenger, pilot Ted Fletcher. (From article in New York Times)

Now it was time to really start heading south.

Another great road in this area is heading back south from West Milford to Newfoundland on State Route 513 / Union Valley Road.

One thing I like about old train stations is that there is always a lot of interesting stuff around.

I am guessing this concrete structure was the base for a water tower.

I don't know why this Morris County Central Railroad caboose is here.
They are listed with the Whippany Railway Museum.

Newfoundland Train Station is located along the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway.
Newfoundland was a popular resort destination at the turn of the century.

If you are a train buff here are pictures of several different railroad liveries passing this station on RailPictures.Net.

Information on Newfoundland Station including it's part in the movies.

This was a tag at one time.

It is at the end of a road that goes around the eastern side of Green Pond.
The road is called Lake End Road.
I would think it should be Pond End Road ?

Just over a mile and a half from 513 to here.
And we had to turn around and go back.

It was a nice ride back there so that wasn't a problem.

These are the type of houses in this area.
This one is directly behind the first picture.

I often wonder what people think when they see all of these bikes stop near their house !

And here is Green Pond.
Well, the end of it anyway !

The Gang.

You may have noticed that nice old Moto Guzzi.

If I remember correctly it is a 1985.

And it belongs to this fine gentleman.

Satan's Church !!!

That's what they tell me anyway !

I didn't think it was that bad.

Just sad seeing it in such a poor condition.

The church is located on a road that had the designation of CR 666 !!!
That is probably where the name came from after the church closed.

I can not find out what the original name of the church was.

I did find these nice flowers here.

The church looks a lot better since it was painted.
A lot better then when these pictures on "Lost Destinations" were taken.

Here are some pictures of part of the inside on "Surreal New Jersey".
They call it Satanic Church but they don't know why either.

WeirdNJ seems to only have a picture of it on-line. I thought they had more?

It was getting late and there was at least one more thing I wanted to see.

We called this Patriotic Tank.

Found at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Dover.
Also known as the Dover Armory.

One of the gentlemen that started the ride with us knew about most of the tanks people were finding all over the state because he had worked with most of them in some capacity.

Don't mess with ADV !

I think I wore poor stbob out.

He was with me from Princeton.

This picture was taken at Satan's Church, but I did not want to post it there.

At this point everyone went there own way except the other rider from Southern NJ.

We were near a major Interstate and it was pretty easy for everyone to get home from here.

The other gentleman who sat in the middle of the road was from Central Jersey and he left just before Satan's Church.
I guess he had enough of the Devil's influence for one day !
He had been with me from the beginning also.

Just....

One......

Stopppp ........

It was on the way home !

I couldn't resist !

Bloch Brothers of Wheeling, WV.

Here is a picture of their place in Wheeling in 1931.

I thought I had gotten a picture of the side of the building, but I guess it was getting late and I forgot.

The front of this building faces W Blackwell Street in Dover, NJ.
This advertisement is painted on the back of this building along S Warren Street.

Wow !

What a day !

Mapquest tells me it is 107 miles from Dover back to my house.

When I got home I had ridden 380.7 miles and had been gone for 18 hours 10 minutes.
I had also visited 37 places that the Garden State Tag-O-Rama riders had tagged.

You would think that was enough right ?

Uhhh.......

NO !!!!

I went out again the next day to some more places in Southern New Jersey that I wanted to see !

Some interesting information on how this shrine came about under "History" on the link above.

This is not to far from Saint Padre Pio Shrine,
but it has nothing to do with it.

This is a Russian Orthodox Church called Holy Virgin Protection Church.

It was built here in a community named New Kuban which was established when the Cossack supporters of the Russian czars were forced to flee their home country after the downfall of the monarchy in 1917.

This article about Cossacks in New Jersey from 2005 says New Kuban was settled after Wold War II and not World War I.

Very nice architecture.
The bell tower is separate from the building and off to the right from the above picture.

On the way to my next stop I saw this and I have to pull over.

It was too interesting to pass up !

I have found a lot of things carved out of old tree trunks around Southern New Jersey.

I don't know if they are done by one person or not.

They are all quite unique.

You will see more later in this thread.

Just up the road from here I passed a place that had a bunch of things carved out of wood.
I keep wondering if that is this guy who does all of these.
He goes by the name of Ackmonster.

His ackmonster.com website it is currently under construction.

I found some history on this gentleman on zoominfo.

A little further down the road I pass this nice scene.
