Nice to see you still posting PC....in spite of all the TOR game stupidity. From guys not knowing how to play the game, to giving flat out bad clues, to dropping a tag and waiting a whole 14 hrs to give the GPS coordinates since no one went for it...it's just getting silly. I am still watching the threads, but with the current crap still going on..gonna continue to stay away myself.

Weather is getting nicer.....we'll have to meet up for a day of riding here soon.

Well Doug, it is New Jersey !

We gotta keep up our image !

I have a lot of places I want to visit in the NorthEast of the South sometime.
I am trying to go to every tag in Southern New Jersey before the shore gets busy again.
I'll let you know.

From the bridge in Salem I rode to Fort Mott.

There is a lot here so I will break it up somehow.

To get there I went right by the Finns Point Range Lighthouse.

Believe it or not, part of this park is actually located in Delaware !

For those of you not up on your geography, New Jersey is separated from the State of Delaware by the Delaware River.
But for some reason the Delaware State boarder comes to the New Jersey shoreline.
It actually comes from a land grant issue where they made a 12 mile circle around New Castle Delaware.
That is also why the top of Delaware is an arch.

You learn something new every day !

OK, enough history for now,

Here is Fort Mott.

That hill in the background is part of the artillery battery.
The Delaware River can be seen on the left, and the officers buildings can be seen on the right.

A closeup of the info.

Here is one of the gun turret foundations of Battery Harker.

A rear view of the same turret.

This is a rear view with Battery Gregg on the left (center of picture), and Battery Harker on the right.

This is looking down the back side with Battery Arnold closest to you.

The State of New Jersey's information on Fort Mott.

Fort Mott was actually part of a three fort defense system where the Delaware Bay narrows into the Delaware River.
Fort Mott on the New Jersey side, Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River, and Fort DuPont in Delaware City, Delaware.

Fort Mott had three 10 inch guns in Battery Harker, three 12 inch guns at Battery Arnold, both with disappearing carriages.
They also had two batteries with 5 inch rapid fire guns and one battery with 3 inch rapid fire guns.

Here is an interesting Visual Tour of Fort Mott.

Here is a map of the grounds with the batteries labeled.

Interestingly this has never been used as a tag in New Jersey.

On the end closest to the river you have the oldest part of the fort.

This was built in 1872, but is said to have not been finished.

This old tower was built in 1902 to guide the guns.

This building was one of the last ones built.

Looking out over the Delaware River you can see quite a bit.

The Salem Nuclear Power Plant is on the left , and the Route 9 bridge in Delaware that goes over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal on the right.

A better view of the bridge.

I have been over that bridge a couple of times, and it always looks scary to me.
You have this two lane road that looks like it goes straight into the air as you approach it.

I had taken a picture across the river at the fort, but it did not turnout too well.
It was only the Valero Delaware City Refinery !
Which is for sale by the way.
Just in case any of you have been looking to buy a refinery !!!

The other part of this park is Finn's Point National Cemetery.

This monument commemorates the Confederate Soldiers buried here who died during their imprisonment at Fort Delaware during the Civil War.

A plaque of the Gettysburg Address.

The base of the monument has giant plaques with the names of the men buried here.

This monument was used as a State Tag.

As seen in the picture above, there is also a section of this cemetery set apart for the Union Soldiers who died while serving at Fort Delaware.

There is another section set apart for soldiers from later wars.

US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Interment.net. (The plaque shown here is now missing.)

Historical Marker Database for the sign in the previous post and links to all of the markers in this cemetery and also Fort Mott.

A sad commentary on our past.

I wanted to get back to Cowtown Rodeo and get some better pictures of the Muffler Man Cowboy, but I ran out of time.
I had to go by Richman's Ice Cream parlor so I stopped to get some more pictures for nostalgia since it was recently auctioned off.

Definitely showing its age !

Just a sad sight for us South Jerseyians.

An older couple had driven up and they asked me why it was closed.
I had to give them the bad news about Richman's closing its doors.

They went out for a long ride to get ice cream only to find their favorite spot closed.

It came in a package with some Forkskins I got for the DRZ. No worries though..I kept that one off the tool box, just for you. As soon as we get out for a ride, I'll have it with me.

OK, what's next?

A nice RED Truck to go with my nice RED Bike !

Pic-A-Lilly

A little restaurant not too far from me that has Hot Wings.

I went to this before work so I had the place all to myself.

And the fire engine is a Chevy, like my other ride !

Pic-A-Lilly's menu includes Piney Cut Prime Rib.

Under their History tab I found this.
"It all began back in the early 1920’s, when Thomas Snyder, a chemist at The Evans Soap Co. in Camden, lived outside in a tent while erecting this building. He was a man of character, also known back then as the Justice of the Peace. What we now know as Route 206, was a dirt road formerly State Highway 39,which is where “Snyder’s Luncheonette” opened in 1927. Snyder moved out of the tent and into one of the six rooms upstairs, while he rented out the other five. He not only used the upstairs as a hotel, but as a place to hold court meetings. Once the luncheonette business picked up, Snyder needed help operating the business. He sent word to Arkansas that he would need his only daughter Lillian, her husband Pickett Russell, Sr., and their two sons, Tom & Pickett, Jr. to join him here in New Jersey.
The family joined together to sell ice cream, sandwiches, and soda pop. This took place in what is now our main dining room. In 1933, after Prohibition, Pickett Russell, Sr. decided to add our barroom and acquired the first liquor license in Shamong Township. The luncheonette was renamed, “Snyder’s Tavern
”.

Great local history there !

I never knew Route 206 was Route 39.
The guy who opened this place was a chemist at a soap factory in Camden.
Gene Autry visited here quite often in the 1940's.
Even Will Rogers stopped by.

This next stop is one of my favorites.

Menz Restaurant and Bar.

This place has all kinds of weird stuff around.

I never did get inside to check out the other oddities they have here.

This is Mr. Franklin Menz.
Well, a statue of him anyway !
Which is said to be fairly accurate by the way!

He is supposed to be in a rocking chair, smoking a cigar, and he is supposed to only have one leg !

He lost his right leg to cancer when he was a child.

But he has been relegated to making sure no one steals the air conditioning units !

This boat is in the parking lot out front.

I have a better picture of this somewhere!

Ahh, there it is, with snow on the ground this time !

(Mostly ice from what I remember !)
I've been by here three times on my motorcycle.
I can't remember the exact times, mid August, mid October and Oh yeah, January 9th. On the second page of this thread !
And I see I have been by here 4 times on my bike after looking at my pictures!

Mr. Menz sits on the right side of this building, and faces the main road.

It is said to be more than a restaurant as it is described as a kind of Ripley's Believe It Or Not motif inside. (A sampling, but not much!)

More from Roadside America.
(Hey, does that picture look familiar ? )

Here is some history on Franklin Menz who was apparently quite the entrepreneur.

Here is an exert from a book called New Jersey Curiosities.
(Which I had a copy of but can not find !)

The reason it is a big deal that I have been by Mr. Menz 4 times is that this restaurant is in Rio Grande, which is just outside of Wildwood.
That is 70 miles one way.
Not bad in the off season.
During the summer this area is quite busy.
And you will notice that the restaurant is closed in the winter time.

Cape May is as far south in New Jersey as you can go and is surrounded by water.
But I still found this sign down there.

You can see this as you get off of the Cape May Lewes Ferry.

This ferry runs from Cape May, NJ across the Delaware Bay to Lewes Delaware.

Also down here is the Cape May Lighthouse.

The link above has some great info on it.
Like, I never knew this was the third lighthouse in Cape May.
The first was taken over by the sea, the second was built poorly, and then they built this 157' 6" tall lighthouse which is similar to the Absecon and Barnegat lighthouses.

When I first went down here on my bike I stopped at several other tags on my way home.
I didn't get too many pictures at the time because I was running out of daylight, and I never thought I would need pictures for my own thread.
Plus I was in a no parking zone !!!!

I have been to Cape May Lighthouse before, but I could not find any digital pictures, so when I get down there again some time I will take some more and do a more detailed post on it.
They have a museum, a nice beach, some old war bunkers and bird watching areas and such.

This is VFW Post 386 in the town of Cape May.

This was also used as a tag and is also a part of the Polar Bear Grand Tour Rides.
You know, those 'rs !
