I dropped my wife at home on my way to my Tag drop just a bit further south.

I was not that kind with my clues though.

I only posted this.

This is the entrance to Clayton High School's Football Field.

Poking the camera through the gate.

Nice plaque by the flag pole.

I rode around the other side before I left.
This is the back side of the gate.

The High School is across the street.
The grassy area on the left side is the field.

Haupt Field was originally built as a WWII Memorial and also served as the entrance gate for Clayton's Football Stadium.

Found that and an old picture on a Google Book result.

The stadium was later renamed after a Principal of the school, Nana Haupt.

The following Sunday after church we went out with friends once again.

This time to Ocean City.

They have been working on a new bridge to the island.
I posted pictures of that before with my bike next to the BIG RED crane.

The project is now complete.

In the middle of the bridge is the Visitor Center.

There are islands out here, as you will see.
This is on one of them.

Inside is a painting of the old bridge at the Draw Bridge section.

I don't miss that bridge one bit.
Narrow and bumpy !

Then again, it was built in the 1930's !

Another painting by the same artist.

Also inside the visitor center they have the control panel for the old draw bridge.

I wondered about the all important sign that was printed on paper and taped to the panel!

The person at the visitor center said the bridge was old.
In extreme heat the bridge would actually expand so much that it would not shut !
They had to call in the fire department to hose down the bridge to get it to shrink enough to close all the way !!!!

This is the second span going into Ocean City.

My friend and I walked up there to have a look around.

Off in the distance is a power plant.
This is looking south.

You can also see the islands I was talking about.

I believe this was the weekend after Labor Day,
so it was not too crowded, but people were still out enjoying the good weather.

Looking over into Ocean City.
I believe the ferris wheel you can see is the one I tagged a couple of years ago.

And this is looking back at the visitor center.
You can see the first bridge in the distance which attaches to the mainland at Somers Point.

On my map you can see where the old draw bridge was.
The current bridge is shown under construction.
I really don't know if the map you start out with gets updated or not.
Where the visitor center is now shows up as dirt in the form of the parking lot.

This is Route 52 into Ocean City.
It was also called the Ninth Street Bridge because that is the road it comes into on the island.

Here is a YouTube video taken going over the old bridge first with the new bridge construction going on on the right.
About half way over it goes onto the new bridge.
The old drawbridge is at :45.
You will see what I mean by the road being bumpy !
At 3:05 is where the visitor center is.
They filled in quite a bit at that area.

Here is a news clip showing construction and some of the problems with
trying to keep an old bridge open while building a new one in it's place.

We road onto the next island north into Longport and then into Margate and the road eventually leads to Atlantic City.

We stopped at the ever popular Lucy the Margate Elephant.
We were here before back on page 29.

Looks like she got her toenails painted !

A Mastodon Manicure !

We decided to head back the way we came in.
I missed a turn and wound up at a Tag I had been wanting to see !!!

Recognize these two guys on the balcony?

The Blues Brothers

Jake and Elwood look pretty good, except for needing some wardrobe repair!

I was looking for them when I found Elvis and Merilyn at Magaziner's Covered Bridge Pharmacy back on page 43.
These two guys were the ones that were supposed to be there.
Here was my quote from that post:
"I heard they use to have Blues Brother statues here before Elvis and Marilyn.
I wonder where they are now ?"

Now I know !

Someone evidently moved them here to Longport, down the shore.

Along with a couple of circus kids !

This is on another balcony.

I did not have my good camera with me.
It was in the shop getting cleaned, but old faithful did a pretty good job.

The bridge we came over was free heading north,
but apparently it was not so heading back south.

Oh well, it was a nice ride.

I could not find any more information about Jake and Elwood online.
Well, these two particular ones anyway !

The following weekend we went a Taggin' to this beautiful Scenic Overlook.

New Jersey Style

That is the Delaware River.
We are in Bordentown looking over into Pennsylvania.
Don't be fooled.
Behind those trees is a giant industrial complex and a landfill !
And I am surprised you can not see the landfill from here !

The NJ side has it's own scenic wonders

Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! New Jersey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If that weren't bad enough, how about some window glass ?

Now that's more like it !

The river.
Viewed over the trash can.

Ooooo, look, River-Horse Brewery.
Another Tag I need to see !

Does this count?

This is looking north into Trenton, which is past the power plant you can see in the picture.

Also looking north from where we are.

We are sitting in a rest area off of Interstate 295, Southbound.

Looking south at the pedestrian bridge for anyone traveling north who wants to come over and take in the great scenic wonder you see before you !

Now that's a Garden State Tag !!!

Tag drop was a place we have been to before, but I finally got to use it as a Tag.

This is a new sign.
But somehow his hand does not look right !

And of course lunch was as good as the other times we were here.

So none of this is required.

I posted more pictures of this place back on page 18.

We had a nice run of good weather the following week so I took off a couple of days and spent one riding.

We went north in NJ to get on some nice roads and find the Garden State Tag-O-Rama Tag if it was available.

On our way we passed several places that looked familiar.
I stopped here to shed some layers and get some pictures.

A beautiful old train station from the late 1800's.

The information sign out front.

The name of the town is unique!

Earlier documents show it as White House with two words.
It is also designated as Whitehouse Station for a town name.
It does get a little confusing, but it is in Readington Township!

Which you can see that name on the front of the building because this is now the Readington Library.

Your choices for the New Jersey Transit train that stops here.

I would go right if I were you !

Here comes one now.

And there it goes !

The backside of the station / library.

An old picture of the front of the station.

And probably more information than I could find anywhere else right there on the side of the building.

OK, here is information from Wikipedia:

Whitehouse

&

Whitehouse Station

Apparently named after a tavern that was here around 1750.
So it is not named after what we know as the White House in Washington DC.

And has a big mouth !

I had wanted to see this for quite a while.

Well, it didn't look like that back in 2009 !

Famous huh?

I knew it was along this road with a wrought iron fence around it next to a corn field.
Other then that I was on my own.

Well, the blue sign did help of course !

Can you see it?

It's in there somewhere !

2 to LG

That's about it !

I checked the back just in case they put some secret code back there.
I have seen National Treasure ya know !

Nothin'

I parked by a sewer drain because the road was wider there.

And there is a curb right in front of the hidden milemarker.

Beautiful scenery up here.

Placed here in 1754!
LG, standing for Logg Gaol, which is the original name of Johnsonburg.

It is pretty old!

I found it on this website along with the one I posted from Philipsburg on page 37.

That's about it for information!

Famous HUH !

It is considered one of the oldest milestones in the United States.
But nobody seems to care !

On the internet, or in person.

The previous tagger had used a Tag that had been done before.
That is a no-no in the Garden State.

Too much stuff around to be doing things we have already seen before.

This is what he had tagged.

I was sitting in front of a nice house with a nice lawn with nice cars in the driveway.
I did not want to get off my bike and take pictures.
I feel uncomfortable taking pictures of private residences.
But if you are going to put something like that in your yard you should expect it !

I have no idea why it is there.

I guess they like tigers !

As I was pulling away they were coming out of their driveway !

I just waved and kept on going !

The name of the road was cool.
Dark Moon Road in a town called Frelinghuysen.

Honest !

Just up the street from Johnsonburg.

The tiger does not show up on google maps so it must be a recent addition.

And we had a great ride home riding down CR 519.

The next day was our church Throttling UP ride.

Our usual participants could not make it for this ride unfortunately.

In their place we had 3 ADV riders join us !
One pulled up as we were leaving.

Once again some nice back roads.

a little boring after being up north on curvy hilly roads !
But nice none the less.

Down past Batsto, and then the Mullica River.

Went from 542 onto 623.

Out to Chatsworth then out to Route 72 to Long Beach Island.

Our first stop was Harvey Cedars Bible Conference in Harvey Cedars.

This started out as a one story hotel back in the 1830's.
It became a Christian Retreat center in the 1940's, just like Ocean City's Faith Tabernacle.

This is the back side facing Manahawkin Bay.

I saw this house out in the middle of nowhere and wondered if anyone really lived in it !

It was another beautiful day.

The front of the hotel as it ended up from it's 1903 renovation.
The last major renovation of this building.

Our group of adventurers.

Next stop was the Barnegat Lighthouse.

I posted pictures of this back on page 52.

What was different about today was that it was actually open !

Spiral Stairs going up!

Starting here.

Where the windows are in the lighthouse there are landings and they displayed pictures of different things at each spot.

This is the movement of this and the barrier island to the north over the years.

Erosion has been a big problem for lighthouses all along the Eastern Seaboard.

But what do you expect?
It's all sand !

Hard to believe they saved it after seeing that picture.

Above the entrance is a little room, which also had more information and pictures.

They apparently had a lightkeepers house here as well.

It did not fair as well as the lighthouse.

The landing at the little room back to the 217 stairs.

Almost to the top.

A tiny portal window.

All of the windows were for light to come in so they could walk up during the day.

What is left of the turning mechanism below the light prism.

And the last few stairs up to the light, which is closed off of course.

And the door going out onto the balcony.

Looking back in at the light base.

This is looking south toward where we came in.
You can not see the bridge from here that we crossed getting onto the island.
It is 9 miles in the distance.

Looking east toward the Atlantic Ocean.
A jety had been made to keep the sand in it's place.
They also put a walkway out to the end of it so people could enjoy the ocean view.

This is looking north toward Island Beach State Park.
This is the island that Seaside Heights is on.
It is also too far in the distance to see from here.

Seaside Heights by the way had been rebuilt and used for the Summer Season at the beach.
Unfortunately the weekend after Labor Day they had a big fire there which destroyed
most of the boardwalk that they had just rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy.

I looked down into the parking lot where we parked and one of the guys bikes was missing !!!!!

Turns out he moved it to get some pictures.
That is him at the bottom in the orange shirt !

This is looking straight down where we came into the lighthouse.

Could not see much of the light with the glare.

Plenty of people out enjoying the last days before fall and winter.

This one was probably working.

I was surprised to see what is actually holding this cage we were in to the lighthouse !

The top wasn't much better!

Well, it's been here this long, what could go wrong?

The guy in the orange shirt moved.

Time to head down.

I tried to get a picture through the flooring.

Our exit at the bottom.
Notice the hole at the bottom.
They have air holes all the way up like this.
The walls are very thick here at the bottom and taper towards the top.
This is for ventilation.

And a look from the jety.

The end of Island Beach State Park to the north from ground level.

Ooooooo, looook, a seagull.

So after our trip up the lighthouse we went to lunch just up the street.

Another nice old diner.

With an interesting name!

On the door into the diner.

And guess who was here at one time !

Yup!

He apparently taped three episodes while he was here.
The waitress was very informative.

When I walked in the place looked tiny !

But when they called our name they took us to a back room off to the right that was bigger than the original diner.

It is an old Fodero Car, but they did not say the year.
Found that on a google book result about "The History of Diners in New Jersey"

But Mustache Bill's has been here for over 50 years.
Here is their facebook page, which states they opened May 9, 1959.

Here is an interesting article about "New Jersey is Diner Central" I found interesting,
and the picture they show is the inside of Mustache Bill's.

I had asked where the name Mustache Bill's came from
and the waitress said that the owner has a big white mustache
and you can probably see him in the kitchen through the window
with a paper towel wrapped around his head like a sweat band.

And she was right !

Sorry, no picture.

I was going to, but was not sure he would like that !

Here is a video of Guy Ferrari from the Food Network with Mustache Bill.

He seems like a really nice guy.
I should have taken a picture !!!!

His mustache looked bigger to me in person,
from 25 feet away !

I will just post pictures of the next two places and then get back to commentary later.

************************

OK, I'm back !
Wow, a month exactly.
And almost the same time too !

After our nice ride to Barnegat and after everyone left me I went for the Southern Tag.

This was not far from where the last rider left me.
So, why not ?

Located in Hammonton it is not much to look at.

But the color is interesting !

Rocco's Town House

The information on their website shares how they came up with the name Town House.

"Years ago townspeople would meet in taverns to discuss and debate the issues of the day. They
would often refer to their local taverns as the 'town house' (a precursor to the town hall).

In 1949 this tavern opened as The Town House and has continued to provide the people of this
town a place to gather, to eat, to drink and still discuss the important issues of the day
.
"

Town House, Town Hall, what's the difference !
Except for the drinks !

I had always wanted to Tag this building.

It is quite unique.

As you gathered the painting makes it stand out from all of the other buildings in town.

So much time spent on the details.

And one of the businesses located in this building.

No real information on the internet about this fancy paint job.

It looks like a building where you can rent space for a business.

The only two that came up were the Yoga place and an Antiques dealer.

This is also in Hammonton and not far from Rocco's and the Hammonton Water Tower.

That's not a good sign !

(EDIT)

I am pretty sure all of the fluids are supposed to be on the inside of the bike !

I ride to work three days before my big ride to North Jersey and I get a big surprise!

About half way to work (5 miles total ride) I down shift to make a turn and the back end squirms pretty bad!

I think, "What was that about?"

It did it again at the next turn but I was going slower because there was this really, really slow car in front of me.

I'll fix him!

I pass him ASAP and when I look in my mirror to make sure I am clear I see A LOT of white smoke pouring out of the back of my bike !

I figured it was an oil leak.

Nope!
One more squirrely turn later and I pull into the parking lot at work and back into a space and when I get off I see my bike vomiting antifreeze all over the pavement !

I mean it was pouring out like a hose had come off!!!

Oh man!
And me with a big ride this coming weekend.

He was out driving his truck so he wasn't using his bike.
And it needed some miles on it anyway !
He actually had a bad situation with his truck but he let me borrow his bike anyway because he was still out of state.

So, on our Bruce Run IV I have a borrowed bike because mine was not finished in time.

I finally got it back about a week later.
They had a hard time finding the part.
Which turned out to be one of the Radiator Hoses.

This tiny hole must have been under a lot of pressure to have the antifreeze come out so fast.

So that was a big challenge to get everything taken care of on such short notice.

But it all worked out thankfully.

Thanks Mr. Radiator Hose for an exciting week!

And you all will get to see some more great pictures !

Or if you can't wait you can check out the thread I liked earlier.
