Ask woody about your BMW F800GS billet hubs/wheels

Hooray,,,hooray they are on their way!!!!

huh????......wassup????.......
GREAT news!!!!

FYI: the new billet hubs are being prototyped and machined as i write....

so here's what's cooking,,,the first front hub has been sent my way, analyzed and corrective feedback given,,,so i'll be getting the upgraded one for a final inspection shortly,,,it should weigh close to half pound less than the original....when approved we'll start machining metal

next,,we hammered out the final plans for the rear,,,after much soul searching as well as researching prices and other options i decided to essentially take the proven RAD KTM 950ADV hub and make the node points ie widths identical to the oem rear hub....

PROS:
1... it will be substantially lighter and smaller in diameter

2...this will result in us using significantly smaller diameter bar-stock,,,,leading to lower costs and waste

3...by utilizing the 950 hub as a basis we lowered R&D costs

4...by utilizing KTM sprocket components we have much lower component costs BWOE circa $70 /KTM for 42T or45T versus $94 for BMW's 42T .....There's greater diversity in sprocket sizes and aftermarket sprockets and rotors for the KTM

5...our set-up will end up costing less than trying to build a trick wheel using new oem components FYI: we can still build trick wheels using your oem hubs as a basis

6...i have ascertained today 1-5-2010 that the solution to the disc side will be to modify the ktm disc side a tiny bit in order to mount an adapter plate from the KTM's smaller 6 bolt circle to the very large disc 5 bolt circle...so this set-up will require the re-use of your oem disc and abs ring,,, a cost saving benefit plus your brake pads are already seated to your disc,,,,

CONS:

1...you'll have to buy a complete package,,,ie hub/sprocket carrier/rubber dampeners/sprocket n hardware

here's the silver lining : at least you'll have a hub and sprocket carrier that's a tangible object!!,,yesterday i tried ordering all the above items,,NIS since the f800 was offered to you!!!,,,in fact the sprocket carrier isn't even listed in the MAX BMW fiche...kudos to my gal friday Jessica for tracking down 3 hubs and 13 sprocket carriers in germany...

FRONT:

REAR:

more pics and story here:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=145899

so these are just teaser pics of the old Ktm hubs we built,,upgraded stuff will be posted ASAP

Special Kudos and Gratitude go to:
Donato Yannatelli
for loaning his hubs to RAD n WWW for final R&D work....

woody

Yeah, pretty stoked about this one. I talked to Woody the other day and I should be one of the first ones to have the set up going. I live near by so it's easy to get in out of his place.

He rebuilt my front wheel with a 1.85 Excel rim, super laced, stronger spokes, etc and it has been bomb proof. I will start on the rear wheel with the new billet set-up and also convert to a more narrow 18" rim. Also stoked to hear about what Woody will be doing with the cush-drive and sprocket so we can use KTM set-ups for gearing.

I'll be sure to post pics and let y'all know how it goes.

Hi Woody
All the best for '10.
I wrote to you previously and I'm still very interested in a set of new wheels for my F800GS.
Is it too early to ask for a quote for 1 complete set, front and rear, including shippment to Bahrain? Furthermore, can the rims be black?

Regards
Graham

here's woody's incentive plan for ADVriders of BMW F800GSs

How would you like to have your cake and eat it too???

Anyone who get's their oem rear wheel upgraded to better spokes/rims/superlace,,i will check and repair your mis-bored oem hub while i have the wheel apart already...my preference is that ya get the replacement parts from BMW under warranty ie bearings and seals if necessary....if i supply new components,,,it won't be more than $20-30 for new bearings n seals....

i've developed a better technique to hone out your bores to the size they should have been in the first place

Sneak-preview and Pics of new stronger 'n lighter F800GS Billet Hubs

sooo ,,,here's the final version of the 5oz lighter front hub,,,,next to the oem,,,you'll have a free choice of colors,,all your oem hardware discs and ABS ring will swap out

Here's a sneak preview of what the rear disc/ABS side will look like,,,an adapter plate transforms the smaller 6 hole KTM hole pattern to the larger 5 hole BMW pattern. The adapter will be invisible behind the oem disc and ABS ring,,,,on the other side the cush drive assembly will sport oem KTM cush drive rubbers and 950 sprocket bolt size and pattern...allowing a broader more cost effective choice of sprockets....are we in the ball-park???....pass the word because we are in the last stages getting ready to let chips fly...kudos to Bob and Shane at RAD for collaborating and making this project a reality

Pics of new Rear F800GS Hub

OK here's the first prototype rear....all major node points are right on the money...if you look at the outline of the sharpie,,you'll see the profile necessary for the ABS ring to clear the adapter...

here the pen points to the little re-enforcing lip on the backside of the ABS ring ,,,oops my pen moved..actually it is the lil lip around the outside that curls upwards that got in the way,,,OBTW this pic shows the ABS ring wrong-side up just to illustrate what the glitch was..FYI most ABS rings are just flat sheet metal.

view from sprocket adapter side of cush unit with main hub to its right...

here's the 45T Supersprox,,also available with oem KTM 42T ,44T, 45T,46T,50T & 52T amazing ehhh...variety/bling/just $84.95ea vs.oem BMW=just 42T available for $94ea

here's all the components needed to get the job done,,special spacers,,and adapter plate,,,oem BMW rear disc and ABS ring to be swapped from your wheel or pay circa $450 for those 2 items with mounting hardware if ya do not feel like doing the manual labor
