No, it didn't burn to the axles. But, the OSHA certified mechanic who walked into the shop, on a job that was started by others, and dragging his oxy-acetylene torch, failed to notice the fuel tank on the floor not five feet from the spot where he was attempting to superheat a bearing on a steering stem to get it it removed.

He very quickly alerted others to the FIRE, and calmly, picked up the flaming tank and carried it outside as it spewed a streak of flame.

The thing that did burn to disintegration was a vinyl beach ball that was on the floor in front of the tank, and quickly filled the barn--- loaded with 3 other vehicles--- with black smoke so thick that it looked like the lights had gone out.

So, this is a tank that has been off the bike numerous times and never leaked a drop. How did it spontaneously ignite?

Fumes ignite, not drops. There were probably fumes from the residual fuel in the tubes extending from the petcock(s).

Or it was the hellifino.
