Low cost Mods and Tricks for KLR 650

Ok. following the "Keep it cheap" creed of KLR 650 owners and the fact that it is Wintertime when we do things to our workhorse KLRs......

How about we share our ideas on great ways to save a Dollar, Pound, Yen etc.

By the way, what is the 22 cent carb fix I have heard of?

And where can I buy 2 Mermite cans for panniers?

Does anyone have a used Happy Trails Pannier (KLR 650) rack for sale??

Anyone have a Tank Bag (specifically for KLR 650) for sale?

I will consider any other accessories for sale too, auxiliary lights, etc.

For mermite cans check your local army surplus store.

Here is a good link for KLR owners also :

The 22 cent mod is just buying a washer for 22 cents and using it to shim the needle in your carb up. It takes about 20 minutes or so and yes, it makes a difference.

Edit: nevermind...I see that you're about 50/50 on your intended targets.

Anything that uses zip ties, duct tape, hose clamps, or baling wire should meet the requirements.
But all kidding aside, mine will be one of the last to leave my fleet.

Buy some square stock and make your own racks. Look in the garage forum and you will see were several KLR owners have done it. I will have mine done in the next couple of weeks, then the 20mm ammo cans are going on. Prolly have a grand total of $70 bucks in a set of hard panniers.

O ya if you have one of the silver frames like my bike does, silver engine paint from AutoZone matches the paint real good. Mine had battery acid all over it, looked bad. Now it looks like new.It is the high heat rated paint and has held up great.

my twenty-two cents

yeah, do the 22-cent thingy. just follow the instructions and you'll be good. be sure to get the right diam. washers. I live in CO and added just one. It only took me 20 minutes and I'm no wrench. seemed to open the power band up a little and there's no down-side that I can think of.

I would recommend the "L" mod to the air box as well.

I went the cheap route on footpegs, swapped on a set of ebay DR pegs that were an improvemen, but I regret not going all the way on really good pegs. the DR pegs just aren't long enough, though they definitely add more gription on the ole boots.

Also picked up a tool tube from a farm store, but haven't figured out where to put it yet.

Lighting kinda sux on the older bikes. I installed the wiring harness thing and it helped, but I've been considering adding some projector style aux lights this winter. I know there's not a lot of "extra" juice on this bike so I'm curious to hear from anyone who's upgraded the stator, or whatever you do to increase electrical capacity

KLR panniers

I just saw a set of soft bag racks in the Flea Market thread a day or so ago. It wasnt exactly cheap but I just received my HT guards for the radiator and plastic. I found read pannier rack on Ebay for a decent price. Those will go on this weekend. Found some slightly used bags at the BMW shop off a KLR trade in for really cheap. Motogear had a holiday sale and I couldnt resist Symtec heated grips. Im gonna make a rack for my tent and gear outta some aluminum plate, thats concludes the winter farkleing for me and my budget.

My personal favorite:
Line the inside of the brakelight housing with reflective tape to make the brake more visible.
