Sakhalin or unfinished the BAM road

Railway BAM had to pass along the Amur River
to the Okhotsk Sea.
To Cape Lazarev.
There, in the first 50 years have built an underwater tunnel to Sakhalin.
Then the road constructed to the south of Island.
Road construction stopped when Stalin died.

our track

We are well prepared.
I did with Google a lot of tracks.
Our motos KTM690 and BMW G650XC got custom bags.
We have forwarded bikes in boxes by train to Khabarovsk.
Sending in the boxes is 3 times cheaper than, about $ 250.
In Khabarovsk, we had to meet with Walter (Walter Colebatch, see http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533442)
Unfortunately, he could not fly from Magadan to Khabarovsk.
If we met, you would have seen a very good picture of Sakhalin Island :)
When we arrived in Khabarovsk our moto was a Roman, in his autoservice station.
We collected motos and 25 July and Roman led us outside the city.

to Selihino is an asphalt road
further only gravel and stone.

some of the roads pass through the mountains.
We've been waiting for this trip, we had fun, and run this road with a very high speed
Stones spoiled new Unicross per 300km

seaport De-Castry, Okhotsk Sea

You've gotta be kidding.. You're doing the BAM road too? And you ran into Colebatch and friends? It's a small world indeed, even in Siberia!

Let's go

Let's go
There is not a modern BAM, this part of BAM has just only begun
Stalin planned to build Bam to Sakhalin, and built a tunnel and the road on the island, but he did not have time to finish.
We planned to pass together this way
but he could not leave Magadan at the right time.

Cape Lazorev, tunnel, crossing sea

From De-Castry, to Cape Lazorev laid pipeline.
Pipeline laid along the service road to the cape

Cape Lazorev

At this point, Stalin tunnel.
A small island in the sea, is the second entrance into it.
By the entrance was paved road.
Now the sea to destroy it

This is the main entrance to the tunnel.
Entrance is at the top of a hill about 23m above sea level

letter from the past:

This pile was started April 8, 1951
ended May 4, 1951
Master Rukhin

We set the tent next to mine.
Here is a very high place and a strong wind.
we put a tent in the trees.

In the morning we know that a strong
wind blows and the ship canceled.
We traveled to surroundings.
In this cave workers kept the food.

The next day, early in the morning,
we finally embarked on the ship
It is a small diving vessel for submarine pipelines

At this point from the mainland to Sakhalin, just 7km

At last

I have been waiting for this one.

Part of my plans for the summer had been to finish the Road of Bones, then meet up with these two guys, Pate and Gelos, in Khabarovsk, and then spend 2 weeks exploring Sakhalin island with them, before kicking off on the BAM Road.

Pate and Gelos were on strict schedules tho and I needed to arrive in Khabarovsk on the 25th of July. We couldn't get a guaranteed flight out of Magadan in time so we took the only sure option available to us - we put our bikes on a ship from Magadan to Vladivostok on the 22nd of July ... by the time the bikes had arrived in Vladivostok (at the start of my BAM Road thread) it was the 30th of July ... and Pate and Gelos had left Khabarovsk 5 days earlier. Tony, Terry and I were a week late for our rendezvous with these guys.

The Sakhalin Tunnel

Here is a more detailed history of the Sakhalin Tunnel.

Stalin's project has resurfaced in recent years with President Medvedev publicly supporting the idea.

The big picture plan is to join the BAM Railway with Sakhalin, and then join Sakhalin with Hokkaido in Japan with another tunnel. That would means there would be a direct rail link between Japan and the EU, passing through just one intermediary country. Goods could be transported to Europe in 7 days by train, rather than a month by ship. Additionally for Japan, it means raw materials from Siberia (and Siberia has anything and everything when it comes to raw materials) has a very quick and direct route to anywhere in Japan.

Pier Cape Pogiby, Road Pogiby-Nysh

Hi Walter!
I am glad to read you, thanks for the link to the wiki.
I can only add that the project accelerates the demographic penetration of China in the east.
Government is trying to develop this region so that more citizens of Russia can have a job.

Pogiby - in Russian, place of death.
Even in the last century, in the narrow strait, died escaped convict.
They tried to swim to the mainland, and drowned because of the rapid flow

Now in Pogiby lives of 5 people.
Our boat was carrying whom that medicine, it waited for 3 days.

Captain (in glasses) and his crew

Road Pogiby-Nysh

This road in the last century was the main one.
In the first 50 years it was built anew.
It was built along the railroad.
There were GULAG prisoners camp .
Until now preserved houses in which lived guard.
Most of the bridges destroyed,
Nobody here is on the road already growing small trees

GULAG prisoners camp

Here prisoners lived

Raised bridge

I tried to cross the river,
very soft sand

have to go here

Next day. Central Sakhalin.

Here, the dusty roads of small stones (greder).
Speed increased significantly, about 80-110km / h.

We visited the old Chinese village.
This is one of the first settlements in this area.

I had the coordinates of the Japanese fortified region.
We tried to find a Japanese bunker.
We had to cross the new pipeline.
It was the worst day.
a fine rain, it was very hot, we were bitten by mosquitoes.
Motorcycles were drowned in the mud.
We left the luggage.
Nonetheless the last 300 meters on foot.

Smirnykh, civilization.
It flew fighter shot down Korean Boeing KAL 007
On the east coast there are some very good asphalt.

Two winners Dakar :)
