Lake Superior Circle Tour ADV Style!

This trip was during the end of July 2009.
Two friends that have known each other for over 30 years. One very experienced ADV rider and the other a newcomer to the adventure motorcycle world.

As with many plans things changed a few times before this trip came together.
After a few months of communicating long distance it all comes to a start.

We start out with Hektoglider arriving at my shack close to the Lake!
With a few last min adjustments were off on our way heading east on the North Shore of the Big Lake.

Fuel up @ Pass Lake the KLRs are good for another 400 to 500 Km.
We didn't ride into Sleeping Giant (Sibley) because we had both been there many times and really wanted to get rolling.

I quick run down to the shores @ Hurkett. It gets us off the Bitumen and onto the gravel.

Hektoglider had tracks on the GPS for this entire trip. This was just one of the many side trips that really made the trip.
Several Kms off the Bitumen to the north we came to a fantastic scenic lookout.
Didn't hurt that Hektoglider pulled out the smoked lake trout for a lunch snack.

A nice ride down the North shore to the village of Rossport.
We stop for coffee, a look at the maps, and fill up our water containers.

Lake Superior Circle Tour ADV Style!

Back on the road and our destination was to get to the Jackfish ghost town.
So we ride some more pavement before getting to the good stuff!
This was a real hidden gem. No billboards to this location.

Once again Hektogliders GPS tracks brings up to the proper roads to reach our destination.

Up until this trip I had not ridden a larger bike on off road conditions. In the late 70's and early 80's I spent my life on my dirts bikes, but using the heavy loaded bike is a new experience. Hektoglider had to help me through a few spots.
I just needed to gain confidence in my riding. We finally get to our camping location, & this is one special location !We had a full day, putting up tents at dark.
This was a perfect place to camp on the shores of Lake Superior. Hektoglider informs me that the ghost town is further down the tracks, and we will hike there in the morning before getting back on the bikes.

No WiFi but the 3G stick in the laptop gets enough signal to put up a few pics on ADV forum !
A great evening fire to set the stage for our lake side camp on Lake Superior.
It started to rain as we crawled into our sleeping bags.

What an excellent first day of the Circle Tour.

The morning is wet and raining. We have some oatmeal and tea, and hike to the old ghost town of Jackfish.
It was a little hard to find due to a lush grown in area.

As you can see the rain made the ride out a little tricky!
