East Coaster in California in Feb
I'll be in California for 2 weeks in Feb in the LA/San Diego area; I will have 1 week-end to play out there. I was hoping to rent a dual-sport with my GPS and find some good riding areas out there. I see that the Los Angeles/San Padre/San Bernadino Forests are out there - would these places be a good "play-ground" for the week-end? Looking for 99% dirt roads - road quality is not important, single track would be great. I have dirt experience and I'd call my intermendiate rider;
Hoping to rent a DRZ400 from ADMO-Tours for the week-end; Is this a good plan ? Are good places to ride in that area? Is Admo a good place to rent (open to suggestions); thanks for your help gerry |

There will be snow above 4000 feet in Feb. I'd take a look at Anza Borrego and El Mirage or other desert locations. The desert can still be cold in Feb and still snow at some high desert.

Desert is good.
I'll ride with you....... desert day trip to Truckhaven, Ocotillo wells, etc. Might even consider Big Bear for a mtn ride. Just make sure that rental bike has knobs.

What type of riding are you looking for? Something scenic or do you just want to play in the dirt?
If you just want to play in the dirt then Stoddard Wells or Johnson Valley would be a great choice. Both are desgnated OHV areas so you can ride on the many trails or across country legally. Outside the OHV open areas you need to remain on established trails or roads. If you want a scenic ride, Death valley is about a 4 hour ride by pavement from Wrightwood. It's probably too far for a weekend. Mojave preserve is a little closer, about 2.5 hours. Mojave preserve and Death Valley are much more scenic than the OHV areas. Check my sig line for trip report on the Mojave Preserve. Also you can post on the LA weekend ride thread. Someone sets up a ride almost every week. Maybe you can get Riceless to do a Primo 100 for you .

Trip set
Thanks for everyone's insight; Renting a bike in Wrightwood for the week-end. Will be exploring the Angeles NF and San Bernadino on the Sat and then head out to Mojave for the second day. Read a few reports of the area on this forum, so I have a ton of ideas. Fresh set of batteries in the GPS in case I get lost.
