Saturday's 'easy' ride

Thanks Jeff for getting this all together.
And thanks to those who helped me when I dumped the bike, the tape job on the blinker held great.
Here are some of my pix from Saturday's ride:

The group ready to go:

Stop on the way to see if anyone is still behind us (sorry for loosing you guys):

The View over Dayton Valley looking towards Virgina City and beyond:

Lunch at VC BBQ:

The results from the crash on the way up to the peak over Dayton, the hand guards worked great:

The fine tape job on the blinker on the opposite side of the crash :

I began getting ready for the assault 1.5 months ago with a 'simple' cam chain replacement. Mine was getting stretched but was still usable. I figured I should fix it before adding a couple K.

That project turned into a new speedo, new bars, new risers, a new suspension and the cam chain.

When it went back together, it made a horrible noise (only when it warmed up) and I really couldn't figure it out.

Larryboy offered to help, and so I decided that rather than spending $$ at the dealer or fedex I'd drive it down and if it was something simple I might still make the assault.

I decided to go Wednesday @ 11pm. I thought I had to work thursday, or else I would left right then wed night. as it was I Bolted the valve cover back on, put the engine in the truck and all the parts were literally tossed into a box and I took off thurs and got as far as Redding.

I timed it all wrong, because Larryboy had to work 1/2 day Friday. So we couldn't tear into it til Friday night, at which point we discovered the bushing that holds the clutch basket on was shot. I also replaced the Cam bearings, and I suspect that was the actual cause of the noise. So Sat I had to get parts and I didn't get the bike back together til 6 in Sacramento, then drove up to at least have a beer. I had to bail early on the party and headed to Reno, then I left Reno @ 6am and got home in Seattle at about 8.

I forgot my laptop @ Larryboy's house, the whole thing cost me a couple grand, and I rode like 3 1/2 minutes. But I'm HAPPY I have a running bike, and 'I made it' to the assault even if I didn't ride. And I got to see some of you FF's. You pussies that bailed know who you are, I'm not naming names because you know who you are, Eric. Noel too, Faking a double fracture just to avoid being embarrassed by me on that hillclimb... Pretty weak dude!

Anyhow, thanks Jeff, you do put on an awesome event. I've never actually been, but I have had glimpses and it rocks

I am IN for next year.

Another DNS reporting in.
Fortunately I got a chance to pre-run some of the routes that you all got a chance to ride.
Unfortunately the relocation of my family was moved up a week. No problem as I really didn't think it would be a problem to travel to Bend Oregon, pack and load a 2200 sf house, travel to Reno and unload / unpack into our new home, relocate my temporary home (toyhauler) up to the assult so some would have a place to stay. No problem right? Well it wouldn't have been if the home we moved into had a rear fence to keep our dogs contained.
We did manage to make it up Saturday night for the BBQ and meet some of you. It was super kool to meet Matt who just happened to be the guy who changed my flat front tire in last years Baja 1000 at MP 160. What are the odds.
Maybe next year I'll be able to clear my calendar...

twenty too many's footage

Here's the shots I took out there on Friday, day one for me.

There's something about the dust on the "eastern side" of the Sierra!
It sticks with you.

jim is on his way home to ventura as i type. hey jim, i truly appreciate your company on the way up and home; making the long drive bearable and fun. though, your navigation skill sucks; next time i have to listen to yzlvr and sito.....
