I was chasing a guy down the last 5 or 7 miles of the race and could NOT pass him. I figured I could have passed him if I REALLY wanted to, but it was a very strong possibility I would have crashed the process.
The guy was freakin fast.... I reeled him in and reeled him in and when he heard me he took off.....

turned out to be an ADV guy! and because I suck at names, I forgot what it is... so post up!

It was nice to see all you noobies out there. And everyone made it relatively unscathed!

Unofficially I got 21st overall and 2nd in class, coming into the finish less than a minute behind 1st. Dammit.

you freakin rock Mike..... hey I meant to ask you about your 525.... im toying with the idea of getting rid of the SV1000 for one. How bullet proof are the motors? I have never done any work to the 650R and thats whats keeping me racing it..... are you going through your top end every season or....?

also, i think im going to bump to Novice in March!

Let's see, I bought that 525 new in October of 06. It's been desert raced more times than I care to figure out right now, numerous Mexico trips, dual sported, been used as a tow truck to retrieve other bikes from the dez, I have put sticky super moto tires on it and gone canyon thrashing, loaned it to other people to race.

I had the head done a couple years ago, but it's still on the original piston. I just ringed it while I was doing the head. The big thing was I actually wore out the countershaft splines, so I replaced the C-shaft while doing the head.

IMHO, the RFS motor is KTM's shining moment in history. I was sad when they stopped producing them. BUT... I have know other people who have had nothing but problems with them. I suspect most of it was self induced due to lack of maintenance, or a previous owner beating on it.

And I still know where there is one that can be had for a sweet deal

This is the first time ever that someone reffers to me as "freakin fast" Thank you for the compliment. Were you really close behind me at some point? I thought I heard someone scream with joy (I'm not kidding)

I actually think I was going really slow in long straight sections, I have never ridden this kind of terrain so I was really cautious.

We really should pit all together. Even though I met you and CramerTV, I can't really say we met. There was no socializing at the event for me, everything happened so quickly.

I had the 450 version of that bike, and I will echo MotoMike's praise. I've got a Husaberg FE450 now and while the engine is sweet sweet sweet, it definitely does not have the bottom end torque of the RFS. And when you roll on the RFS and wind it out, man it just wants to be revved and will pull to the moon. The key is going to be getting it jetted and breathing well, all of which are common mods and easy to do.

On the maintenance side, just keep the oil fresh, air filter clean, and valves in spec and you won't have any problems. You'll need to change oil and check valves more than your 650, but its really not too bad. And on the valve checks, they are screw and tappet, so setting the clearance is as simple as loosening the tappet nut and backing it out a smidge, insert the feeler gage, and bare snug it so it touches, then tighten the nut. A valve check and oil change was about a 45 minute job for me, and I did it about every 500 miles or so, or 15-20 hours of run time, or maybe after a particularly hard race, like a mud race. My intakes moved a little at each check, but the exhausts never moved after 3 years and 300 hours of ownership. And it was still running crisp and tight when I sold it last summer. I love my new Husaberg, but I sure do miss my '07 450 EXC, too.

I was right on your ass for a little bit but I was just so tired I was beyond caring. plus I suck at the tighter stuff - i can only pass in fairly wide open spots.

not to change your mind ..... BUT ...... i would say lean towards a 525.
a little more torque and better for full out desert where the 450 is better for tighter tracks. same bike, shorter stroke.

both are great.
