Good luck with whatever you decide. Make sure you post pics if you get something!

I was looking at an old CRF450R - it's more than 70lbs lighter than mine! That sure would be nice but if I got a 300 XC like Mike - I would shave off another 10lbs. Probably gonna go with the 450 though - I'm too used to the 4 strokes.

.

i didn't say that the 450 is lighter than the 525, just that with the stroke being longer on the 525, you will have more torque lower and thru the powerband further.

same bike, same weight, same motor, just longer stroke.

Careful with the 450F. A lot of guys race them, but the gearbox was never meant for desert racing. They have a REALLY tall first gear, even with the stock gearing. By the time you gear it up enough for the dez, you are having to slip the clutch a bunch to get through the tech stuff.

That said, I know the CRF's have a rabid following and they do go fast.

everyone that i know that has one says that they are into the motor twice a season though...... i would get rid of a bike so fast if it was that volatile

I know the 450's are good, but everyone that I know that has one says they spend a lot of time in the motor..... thats not something I want to be doing. Id rather get something slower that I dont have to put the money into all the time.

I may even just go buy that Triumph Scrambler ive been wanting....

Oil change every 10 hours and valve check every 30. Stock valves last about 300 hours. Even if you ride every weekend, that is not much. And it's a Honda. KTM requires identical maintenance, and it's not red

Hey pasta I figured I would throw my 2c in since it looks like your thinking like I am.

I have been looking for a 525exc for a while now but never been too serious. I finally got to test ride a beat to hell 520 and the bike was shit, I couldn't learn anything from it except the gear box is pretty nice. It really made a difference when cruising. It also felt like a 250, very light and not really twitchy but much faster to steer than the XRR. Now im pretty sure im going to sell the XRR and get the KTM. I figure the RFS engine is still durable as hell and if the intakes are changed out to something harder the valve adjustments become a minor thing and hey after that there isn't much worry about them lasting. For me I think the KTM will be a better dualsport but also a better trail bike and a better race bike.

On another note I never did get to that race a while back. Im really starting to get that itch now!
