Snotcicle Ride 2010: Steel Horses for Real Horses

The idea started before Christmas over a round of beers at our usual Tuesday night pub gathering. We wanted to organize an event like a toy run, but without the posers, loud pipes, and beer. We tried, but I think we ended up with all three... :)

The "Anti-Toy Run" if you will. We aimed to pick a charity that was 1) rural and 2) less likely to receive attention from motorcycle groups. After throwing around some ideas, we settled on Angel Horse Rescue www.AngelHorseRescue.org They are essentially a homeless shelter for horses. According to the kind people at AHR, winter is tough for them and for the horses. Natural food is scarce and the horses need a lot more care when it's cold. Perfect.

So we got a list of needed supplies and organized a ride through the rain and mud. AHR had a lunch for us when we arrived and we all had a great time.

AHR was very appreciative for the swag and donations. I'm not sure, but I figured they probably cleared a least a grand in horse stuff plus cash donations.

Here's a note I received from AHR on 1/17/10...
Hi there,
Just wanted to say a grateful "Thank You" again to everyone that came out in the rain and mud to support the horses. I can honestly say this was one of, if not THE, best fundraiser we have had to date - you all are a very generous group of guys (and gals) and we truly appreciate your efforts and all the great "stuff" you brought for the horses. It really does make a difference in the lives of these horses and your help will enable us to help more horses now. All together, the donations of cash and items exceed $1,000 in value including some donations we rec'd via PayPal which were given in the name of the Steel Horses for Real Horses event. We enjoyed meeting you all and you are absolutely welcome to come out anytime and bring the families to hang out and visit with the horses or whatever.

My wife, Sarah, my sister, Jennifer, and my niece, Eva, also attended.

Who am I missing?

Some pics. Mine was only one of many cameras out today, so I anticipate additions from all.

The day started at about 40 degrees and raining. We planned to meet for breakfast at Savoy Cafe in Tulsa. Very crowded. Most went to Whataburger across the street.

Farmer's breakfast at the cool table.

Met up with the plebes at Whataburger.

Yes, those are hay bales.

We turned the 40-minute ride to AHR into a 3 hour tour. Found some muddy roads.

One notable destination on our tour was Spanish Peak. A massive, mountain in Oklahoma. Like most roads here, it dead-ended before we could get there. Ralph and I had a pic. Impressive, eh?

Hay bales made for squirrely riding in mud.

Stall!

We met up with some other riders near Coweta and headed to AHR, where all riders eventually converged.

We fed some horses apples and carrots while one lucky horse was saddled up for a ride.

The crew!

When we departed, we tried to hook in with some trails lead by Fotobo. Found some discouraging signs and conditions.

Leave no trace?

We tucked tail and left. Fotobo treated us to a cold beer before dispersing to homes.

The ride sticker.

I met FatBob and LewisMedlock at the Buck stop and we waited for another group of riders.

The rest of the group arrived and we were off to the Angel Horse Rescue.

Arriving at Angel Horse Rescue.

There were a lot of cool bikes there.

Some of the bikes were turned into beasts of burden.

My KLR in the garage before the ride and the mud.

A pic of some of the donated loot.

The two guys in the camo jackets next to the grill, cooked lunch for us. They did an outstanding job. Thanks guys.

Tammie, the Angel lady that runs the place.

A pic of Jason (DirtyDog) getting a group of pic of everyone. Thanks Jason for organizing this event. It was definitely a worthy cause and a good time.
