Acceptence is the first part of fixing the problem.

As it turns out our timing was spot on, Ben and Charla rolled into town just as we headed out.

We all headed back to Pete's Camp for the night. When we rolled up to the palapas, we spotted a 950 halfway down the beach. It appeared to be stuck, but that wasn't the case. I'll let someone more qualifed explain that part of the story. But, here is a pic of the scene.

Jack's fuel pump died in the middle of the sand, so I cruised out to jump start the 950. The fuel pump wiring was faulty, so we bypassed it to get the beast onto some harder ground for repairs.

No problemo, surfside electronic troubleshooting is a specialty of mine.

After Chris, Kelly, and Jack left us at the storage yard we got the bikes packed and mostly geared up. The hours posted in the window said that the yard should open at 9am.

9am rolls around and nothing......

At 9:15 we call the phone number, nothing.....

Ben walks over to the door and looks at a paper notice that was taped up written in Spanish. He comes back and says "I don't know what that sign says but I don't like the way it says it."

I went to look and the best that I could figure was that they were closed for the holiday and not supposed to open until Tuesday.

Shit.

I think that I see the problem from here...

See that red canister in the middle of the pic?

Those always cause problems when working on electronics!

Now what?

I had called ahead to the storage yard before we left but none of the employees spoke english so I figured we'd just show up and everything would be cool. I was wrong and I felt like I had hosed up.

I looked at Ben and proposed a couple of options that he wasn't real excited about. He was not happy and I could tell he was fighting hard to not completely lose it, so I decided to keep quiet.

He finally looked up at me and said in the most dejected tone I think I've ever heard from him "I don't know what to do."

I thought about it for a minute and said "Ok. Let's think about our options."

The storage yard had left the gate open and option #1 would have been to park the truck in their yard anyway and leave a note on it saying we would pay when we got back. That would run the risk of the yard having the truck towed or having the truck stranded if we got back and the office wasn't open.

Option #2 was to run back into town and try to find a motel that would let us leave the truck there.

Neither options were optimal but option #2 sounded less risky. Ben hopped on the 640 to do a recon mission while I waited with the KLX and the truck.

20 or so minutes later he comes back. He says "I found a place but it's kind of sketchy. It's a storage yard and it's only 75 cents a day."

That sounded just fine to me so now we had to tackle the next problem. Since the bikes were unloaded we had 3 vehicles and only 2 operators.

Option #1 - Stash the KLX and follow Ben in the truck to the new storage yard and ride 2 up on the 640 back.

Option #2 - Load the KLX back into the truck and follow Ben to the new storage yard.

Both options sucked but we went with number 2 again. The KLX got loaded back into the truck and we took off. When we got to the new storage yard I realized that Ben wasn't kidding when he said it was pretty sketchy. It looked more like a junk yard but it least it was fenced and manned by a real live person. He only spoke Spanish but he seemed pretty cool.

We pretty much just said "Fuck it. If the truck isn't here when we get back oh well. We'll rent a Uhaul to get back to Colorado."

I didn't take any pics before we rolled because we were just barely coming down from panic mode.

Time to hit the road!
