By this photo Kelly has tripled her total road riding miles.

this is about 10mi south of Puertocitos. Follow that jet.

unfortunately the paving is progressing pretty good since last year. I predict 2 years they will be to Gonzaga Bay.
End of the road, time to turn around and find some DIRT!

Ah yes, boiling the devil out of my finger, good times.

In the flurry of activity prior to leaving I'd smashed the knuckle on my middle finger against the foot peg and gouged all of the skin off. I still remember the incident. It was one of the few warmish days prior to leaving, and I was out in the garage with the door open. I'd been working on the bike for a few hours and things were progressing well until my hand slipped. It was shockingly painful, and I yelped accordingly. After throwing my tool across the garage I started swearing and kicking the bike. "Dag. Blasted. Murfle. Farklheimer. Son of a ....", when I hear my dear, sweet, septuagenarian neighbor Mary's charming Irish lilt, "Get em' Jack! Get em'!", while laughing her head off. Appropriately shamed I go inside, fold the big flap of skin back down into place, superglue the whole thing shut, and go back to work. In the words of stateman and philospher Jesse Ventura "I ain't got time to bleed."

Fast forward a week and a half: the knuckle on my middle finger is throbbing, swollen, and feverish to the touch. Somehow it get's mentioned during dinner at Pete's Camp. It might have had something to do with me bumping it against something and screeching like a girl, I'm not sure. Kelly pipes up with, "you should soak it in hot water, and draw the infection out." I've already had a few beers, so this sounds like a good idea. After dinner we go back down to the beach and I start warming up some water. Once steam starts to rise off the water I stick my knuckle into the pan. Kelly chimes in with, "oh, that's not nearly hot enough you sissy. You gotta *boil* the devil out, *boil* him out."
"Couldn't I just put some Neosporin on it?"
"You think Neosporin is going to get rid of the Prince of Darkness?" To be honest, I hadn't really considered how one would go about getting Satan, or even a minor demon, out of a finger. "You're an idiot. No, the only answer is to boil him out."
"But this water is starting to burn."
"That's just the devil trying to stay inside you. Comeon Jacqueline, we don't have all night. Turn up the heat and excercise the Devil from your finger."
I should have known right then and there that this had nothing to do with helping me get better. Kelly just likes to watch me hurt myself.

Jack, your storytelling just keeps getting better. Don't hold back . . . . . we're ready for what you've got to say.

Construction crews are about 1/2 way through a new bridge where Nada (Chuck) took a dip last year. Once they complete that bridge it is pretty smooth sailing to Gonzaga Bay.

From what Coco said, they only have one major bridge to finish, then it's just scrape and pave. I bet it's to Gonzaga by next year.

Some more pics of the dirt before Gonzaga Bay.

Bike talk first. Ahhhh my 530. I have 2 regrets with the whole trip on my bike / luggage setup.
1. Not gearing up taller. At 60/65 it was revving a bit high. Add a knobblie and my mileage sucked on the road. Still very stable and it was fun to pass a truck. 60 to 80 felt like about 2 seconds. Oh, with the weight on back and dense sea level air... 3rd gear throttle wheelies with ease. (hmmm, me rethink my mileage issue... na it was the high speed stuff)
2. Range. With this type of trip I could have used the 6 gal and it would have given me more comfort when were were planning some 200+ mileage days.

Ballena doing sweep.

The knuckle boiling was some good entertainment for the first 2 nights. You're a good sport to let me have fun at your expense.

And just to let everyone know that I am not totally evil, his knuckle did get better!
