That's what I keep saying, but no one believes me.

Mexico's Economeeeeeee

While you FF were enjoying the newly "improved" roads, puttin the growth factor back into the Baja econometrics, the rest of us slobs slaved away -mostly by spending with no regards to income - at cranking up the US (Ueber States).

Translation: We're mighty jeaous of your trip and wish we could have been there (if for no other reason then to see chicks dressed in less then full length fur coats).

Cheers!

Great thread. And the best part is, I know understand the "Charla-head" comments I saw when I went to get my ADV hat.

BTW - The unstructured Caution hat does fit my giant noggin, but Ben stole it from me.

I forgot to mention that as we were leaving Mexicali, the 640 had a little pinging at WOT. I figured it was jetting and changed the main as Charla broke down camp. We fueled up and pointed due south towards Gonzaga Bay.

The bike was still pinging, but I had no larger jets with me, so I just cruised until we left the pavement and got onto my most favorite road of rocks.

Sometimes I go into full on race mode for no real reason at all, and this was one of those times. Flying along and sliding, dodging the larger rocks, focusing on nothing other than the task at hand. The 640 was finally in its element, other than the fact that I was carrying a lot of weight, it handled way better than the DRZ which I rode last year. I was w00ting out loud for quite a while.

We cruised into Rancho Grande and made some new friends.

Lots of new pavement south of Puertocitos.

But we eventually hit the dirt.

There's a bike in there somewhere.

It didn't take too long to get to Gonzaga Bay and as we pulled into Rancho Grande we were surprised by the changes. They have grown A LOT in the past year. What was just a small mini market has expanded to a larger market and a restaurant with a large tiled patio. It's very nice and we were all excited to relax in the shade and have a couple of cervesas. The market only charged 25 pesos for a Pacifico Ballena (equivalent to 3+ bottles) so the Colorado drinking crew got to work.

I stole this one from Chris. The running joke was "No that's a regular sized beer, Kelly's just really fucking small."

Since we weren't expecting the rest of the group until the following night we decided to camp on the beach instead of staying at Alphonsina's. Palapas were secured and we headed out.

Ben decided that Los Knoblitos were thristy after a long day of eating dust so they got a little sip too.

Camp was setup and then we got to work lazing around.

Air punch! Kelly was very excited.

And Chris fell into a deep and unabiding love with Mexican junk food.

We were starting to get hungry since we'd skipped an official lunch so we wandered over to Alphonsina's for dinner.

It wasn't quite dinner time so we had a few minutes to enjoy the sunset (while our bellies grumbled from all the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen.)

It's hard to get away from the ADV presence in Baja.

Ari and Emily joined us. It took them a lot longer to get there in their little truck than it took us to get there on the bikes.

The fish tacos were awesome as always and we had a great time. Back at the palapas it was time to crack open another ballena.

Standing around in the dark isn't all it's cracked up to be and we all hit the hay pretty early. I think maybe we made it to 8:30.

January 3rd has been covered pretty well already, I'll just add some pictures.

Sharing of the Ballena.

Nice view from our tent.

That gear looks like that huh? It was 70-80's they whole time. Cold/chilly at night but similar to CO in the early summer. I started sweating immediately if we were not moving.
