January 1st 2010
Despite much pressure to stay for breakfast we decided to head out early. We were farther from halfway to Calexico than we originally thought so we had a long day in the truck ahead of us. We rolled out pretty early with a commitment to stop on the way back to pick up Ben's new toy. ![]() The drive was pretty uneventful and we were making great time. I was getting better at the pre road trip dehydration technique and only had 1 cup of coffee before leaving Gordy's house. When we got to the north side of Phoenix I noticed something that got Ben pretty excited. In-N-Out Burger had expanded into Arizona! Ben has been an In-N-Out junky for years, going so far as to have me fly from LA to Phoenix with a cheeseburger in my pocket when I went to visit him. Ok, maybe not actually in my pocket but you guys get the idea. He REALLY likes In-N-Out Burgers. We weren't quite ready for a stop so we waited until we were on the southwest side of the city and then set the Garmin to take us to the nearest store. Modern technology is amazing. ![]() ![]() ![]() Happy man. ![]() We made it to Calexico with a little bit of daylight and Ben proceeded to select the sketchiest motel he could find. The only criteria that had to be met was that we needed to be able to back the truck up to the room door so that hopefully we would still have a truck load of bikes in the morning. ![]() The Don Juan really wasn't as bad as it looked and I was pretty happy about that. The sunset in Calexico was beautiful but my crappy camera that was handy couldn't do it justice. ![]() The town had pretty much rolled up it's sidewalks by dark but we decided to go for a walk anyway. We could hear all sorts of fireworks and parties going on on the Mexicali side of the border and Ben was ready to cross that night to join the party. I made a quick call to Kelly to find out where their crew was and they said they would hit Calexico late that night. I told them where we were and told them to wake us up when they got here. Then we settled in the catch some zzzzzzz's

6am is when the journey started for myself, cvestal, and HomerJ. We drove straight thru from Colorado Springs to Calexico. ![]() Our drive was pretty uneventful except for one gas stop. We pulled into a gas station somewhere in New Mexico and discovered the van was leaking tranny fluid. ![]() It turned out to just be overfilled, but as we were sitting there I noticed a red Trooper with a trailer full of bikes pull into the gas station. I said "Hey look, it's Duke, Tami, and Mommer". This was to be the first of a few random meetings that happened on this trip. We were on totally different schedules at this point, they left from Salida headed to Yuma. We left from Co Springs headed to Calexico. It was kinda spooky how our paths crossed.

We made good time and made it to Calexico before Midnight. The loud diesel van woke Ben and Charla from their slumper and they came out to greet us. They gave us our first Pacificos of the trip, and suddenly we were on vacation.
