R versus non R horsepower

It's been written that the new Adventure R has 115bhp and the standard version about 105bhp. Anyone know where the extra ponies are coming from? I also hear that the R is about 11kg heavier, is that correct?

From another of my posts. "Ponies come from reworked engine incl. mappings" And yes its heavier. Being vertically challenged I struggled to get on to it - so did n't even bother with a test ride...

In terms of material changes..... I checked with 5 KTM dealers and they all said - you'd never know they've made a change from the 2009 to 2010.........the big changes were from 2008 to 2009... New dash, tank compartment, bodywork colours, black finished swing arm/brake calipers & Forks and the internals such as alterations to the cykinder head, cam, pistons, and fuelling to give a few more BHP.. oh and i think it wieghs 11 kg more

so all in all I'd save the 1k Euro by the 2009 MY and spend the "savings" on accessories!

Nah
The R is 2 kg's lighter....

990R 207 kg (456.34 lbs)

990 209 kg (460.75 lbs)

Ground clearance is 55mm higher on the R

990R 316mm

990 261mm

I have been told that the only diff on engines are the mapping, you could map a non R to R engine performance.

R.P.M.'s would be my guess (engine mapping/tuning, as stated above). Did you look at what R.P.M. each bike was making it's respective horsepower?

I think I'll go take a gander right now...

The weight loss on the 990R is due to lack of ABS
Standard 990 106HP @ 8250rpm
R version 115 @ 8750rpm

You cannot Map 10 horses out of an already fast motor. The only way is to change the cam timing. The power will have been moved up the rev range at the loss of some lower down. In combination with extractors, you know the front part of the pipes, not the muffler, you could get even more.

Changing ignition timing will never give a 10% increase in power. As for fuel changes..... you would need a Turbo

Cycle World dyno

As I stated in another post, it seems the hp gains in 09 are a little nebulous. Cycle World dyno'd an 09 "R" version and came up with 96 hp. They have always been a reputable rag. So do they really have super duke cams, ecu and porting? Seems doubtful.......but they did get "bold new graphics"

Still probably 10 more than what an '08 and down Adventure would dyno at for RWHP. KTM's claim of 115 (at the crank) is pretty close.

You think horses are easy to get ..... Going to a dry sump will get you 3% ........... Big bloody job

Time your cams for 15,000rpm and take it to a Moto GP track. The rest of the engine would be lucky to do 1 lap.
