From the Dakar site:
02-04-2010 - Destination Chile After a short stop in Argentina, Etienne Lavigne travelled to Santiago in Chile, where he met the new President, Sebastian Pinera, elected on the day the last edition of the Dakar finished. During their meeting, the organisers of the Dakar especially focused on the country’s current difficulties brought about by the very strong earthquake and tidal wave that occurred last month. Like his Secretary of State for Tourism, who travelled to Paris on the day the destination of the Dakar 2011 was announced, Sebastian Pinera reiterated that, in this context, the rally would play an important role in helping the Chilean people “dry their tears”. Biker Felipe Prohens, also invited to this meeting at the Palais de la Moneda, confirmed that “the Dakar 2011 would be an opportunity to show that Chile is still standing”

Yeepers, this is all right out of Alistair MacLean's action novel, "The Way to Dusty Death", published in the early 1970s (not sure if anyone is old enough, as I am, to remember buying the novel for ~US$2 :-) ). Of course, the characters in the novel were auto racing, but still . . .

Rumors says about the frame, tanks and fairing of the 690, with the 450 engine from the SX quad. (quad engine has more capacity of oil, and bigger ventilation oil system). Tested in Tunisia with Coma few weeks ago.

i think there will be a totally new bike,it might look similar to a 690 but i would be sure it will be lighter ,as the 690 frame swingarm etc is built for more power /stress etc,the 450 would need to be lighter for power to weight ratio to be competitive.
it will be good to see when it comes to light.! |
