Personal reason: I'm trying to find much brighter LED replacements for my "old school" 690 based 450RFR kit and not much seems to fit in the above/below 3.25" holes in the fairing, without having to cut away expensive fairing for larger or square lights. Any of you guru guys have a lead on those trick headights? TIA

Back to the speculate-fest currently in progress.

Yep, good lights. I have a Squadron on my dirtbike and it rocks, but it's 3" square and doesn't fit the 3" round holes of the 450RFR mask. Anyway, don't mean to distract this thread too much. If anyone has a good suggestion, I'd appreciate a PM. Thanks!

It's partially that, but more that since the Dakar is now run in South America, it is effectively summer there so the daylight hours are much longer anyway... It doesn't mean that lights are not still required for the early morning starts*, but since the liaison is essential all on tarmac (or at least 'roads' these days) it is not so essential to have ultra high powered lights.

*It's worth noting that the Dakar (or any rally) will not run an actual timed Special Stage until it is light enough for the emergency helicopters to fly... they all wait until first light. That is not to say that people don't get stuck out there into the evening and after dark, but on the whole - due to the longer daylight hours compared to Africa, the top guys (on the factory bikes) as you say are very unlikely to be our there in the dark these days.

As such, the smaller LED lights have been adopted (you see a lot of rally kits utilising the Vision-X Solstice for example) as they do throw out a surprising amount of light - certainly much better than a stock enduro bike headlight, and very white in comparison, so while the ultimate throw may not be the same as an HID, the intensity is perfectly fine for riding off-road in the dark.

As for your subsequent question about something for your RFR - a HID projector light like the Hella Zenon (That Touratech use for auxiliary lights) has a very small diameter, but throws out a LOT of light - however, the problem with HID on a rally bike is mounting the associated ballast box behind somewhere around the already crowded tower... it might be worth looking at the Vision-X Solstice, as although the casing is square, the lens itself is round, and they are only about 2" diameter anyway so would fit in the aperture you have?

The Solstice is the lamp you see on the JVO Yamahas, Speedbrain, Gas Gas etc. bikes...

Hope that helps... Jx

What does quaddrivers mostly use in the dakar thumbgas(thumb throttle lever) oder gasthrottle (twist grip)?

And why?

If you mean the thumb throttle lever rather than a twist grip - presumably for the same reasons manufacturers fit them as standard - for safety in the event of falling off and the quad tipping over and the landing on it's right hand bar end jamming the throttle wide open and the whole vehicle spinning round and round...

That said, with wrap-around hand guards, that shouldn't happen - and in addition I think rally quad pilots also have to have a lanyard engine cut off fitted like other quad racers?

So maybe that just like to have really big thumbs?!

Yes, Barreda pulled out of the Baja Aragon. Nagging injuries was the reason.

Hey Jenny

Thumb throttle also helps when riding. Quad riders have to move their bodies left and right most of the time and turning the handlebars in the opposite direction, sometimes full lock. This brings your wrist in a very weird angle. Imagine a left turn. Body on the left, quad full lock on the right. The right wrist will have a very weird angle when opening the throttle.
Thumb throttle solves this problem.

During a liaison though, or a highway ride to go back, your thumb gets really tired to keep it steady. There is the option to have both so there which solves this particular problem.

Desafio Guarani starts today though getting accurate info from the site is tough. The map suggests that have a loop from Asuncion to Ascuncion but the itinerary says today is a loop from Encarnacion to Encarnacion. I believe Asuncion to Asuncion, the map view, ir the correct one.
