It was a rumor last year and during the Dakar this year, we had no more evidence other than a newpaper article here in Lima reporting that the ministerio of Sport in Peru had agreed to sponsor 3 million dollars for three stages in Peru during the Dakar 2012.

Well this last week we spotted the Dakar scout vehicle in the town of Marcona, 450km south of Lima in a very rocky section of the Atacama desert (away from the famous Nazca lines). We are 100% sure the route will run a good distance to the west of the lines in this part of Peru. What it also means in that we will be having some SERIOUS dune climbs and descents to observe further to the south. You see there are huge dune fields separated by deep valleys that you have to drop into.

When I get some time I will plot and post an possible (read likely) route.

Hi Neil, are you headed back to Nevada next month? I'm surprised you didn't follow that vehicle for awhile to get more inside info

Now you have hit a nerve: My bike wont be in time ready for Nevada. I held off working on it, and now they found water got into the engine and rusted stuff up in there so it has to be rebuilt. Plus I have just taken up a new job that is likely going to screw my chances of making the Dakar next year, so I'll have to postpone to 2013. What its does mean though is I will be riding a lot more in Bolivia as well though, and home base will be moving to Toronto this fall.

Im still going to keep up my connections in Peru though in all liklihood, I will be down here to see the Dakar in Jan. I'll probably do the Nevada thing in August though.

What's on the agenda for your next rally?

More confirmation:

Quote:
The press conference to announce the 2012 Dakar Rally off-road race is set to take place tomorrow in Paris, but Arturo Woodman confirmed today from France that the competition "would end in Lima", and that Peru would host four stages (one more than previously thought) and that the closing and prize ceremony would take place on January 15 in Lima’s Plaza de Armas.
[...]
"There will be three campsites with three route stages beginning in the south of Peru. They will come through Tacna, pass through Arequipa, Moquegua, Ica and Lima. Before the prize ceremony, drivers and their crews will be able to rest in Santa María. Afterwards, the vehicles will come in through the Vía Expresa, making a triumphant entrance so that the public can admire the cars," Woodman explained.

All doubt ( not that there was alot of doubt) about the bikes has been removed

"BIKES: EVERYONE ON A 450CC
The reform which began two years ago has reached its conclusion. All the bikes enrolled on the Dakar 2012 will be limited to an engine size of 450cc. In 2010 and 2011, the compulsory switchover to 450cc for the elite riders led to a more intense battle between the constructors: 4 different constructors were represented in the final Top 10 of the last edition."

Where can I find more details on the entry requirements. A mate from Holland said that entry nowadays (2012 onwards) requires at least the completion of one FIM rally-raid event or similar prior to the Dakar.

What is true about this?

They give preference to pilots wo have done this, undoubtedly, and given the populatiry of the event with 180 bikes entered this year, I think it would be well worth the effort doing another FIM as a warmup.

Its way to much money to spend on a first serious rally, so I think its a good thing actually.

So, finally we know the dates, 1st January to 15th January.

14 days of severe sleep deprivation for me, I think I'd better start putting some sleep in the bank now so that I can keep up with the Team F5 maniacs.

New route, new bikes, exciting times ahead.

no its a long way south, now the Q is where to ship everything to ??

and how to get crates etc to Lima for the trip home again ??

BA to BA the last 3 years made logistics easy, 2012 will be quite a bit less so me thinks
