Yes the story of Clayton was extremely sad. Riding in Mexico, or anyplace for that matter, is dangerous.

We will be riding in "along way from home mode" while in Mexico. We all wish to come back in one piece.

I took a trip to Copper Canyon in 10-07 with a few ADV FFs and had a great time.

No shortage of beer or tequila en Mexico, that's for sure!

The trick with animals - since the subject came up - is to ALWAYS assume that they are roaming freely. About 4 out of every 5 are tied up, but it's that 1 that will walk in front of you and ruin your day.

And unless you are familiar with the roads avoid riding at night like the plague. The joke around here is that the university in Monterrey had a program to breed reflective cattle and that didn't go very well 'cause you never see any of 'em.

Several years ago - back when I was still living in Jacksonville and when we were still doing bike club meetings at the Applebees in JAX Beach - I was on the outskirts of Nuevo Laredo, and was astonished to see this:



Some poor farmer couldn't afford land or adequate barbed wire, so he had his cattle on the right of way of the main road between NL and Monterrey. The fence was only on three sides, and the only thing keeping the cattle out of the highway was the traffic.

There actually is some barbed wire on the sides but even that doesn't extend all the way to the road.

Periodically the cows would wander into the roadway, and trucks would come along and hit their horns, and the cattle would go back.

And the weird thing is that this isn't particularly rural Mexico - it's practically within walking distance of the Nuevo Laredo shopping district.

So do keep your eyes open en Mexico.

It looks like they're only forecasting around 1/3" of rain, hopefully it will just be a bit cool on Sunday. I'm thinking cool will actually be good if we're all geared up for a ride!

the ABS plastic 'mudsling' that fits in front of and partially over the back tire, and snug up near the shock.
