Ok then. How about a closed up, out of business Pizza or Pasta restaurant.

I think I know where one is.

I like the Norton way better though.

The theme would now be bridges...large bridges...from the underside.

Even better if there is another bridge in the background of your bridge picture. Really really good if there are the remains of yet another bridge in the picture.

Sorry, best I could manage was four bridges, one of which is no longer in use, but is still in place (eg: not really "remains"):

OK, now I've staked my claim without getting Bruced, here's some more details:

The shot was taken from beneath the original 4 track railway viaduct (1) between the Melbourne CBD and the Yarra River looking South-South East under the newer 2 track railway viaduct (2) to Queensbridge (3, the road bridge) and in the background, the retired Old Sandridge Rail bridge (4), the first railway line in the colony, which went from the city centre to Port Melbourne, at the mouth of the Yarra River.

Click on the image below to explore, username abc1234, password abc1234.
Click here for googlemap at the same location.

This is the location where John Batman, founder of Melbourne, making his way upstream by boat in 1835, and finding his way upstream blocked by shallow rapids (which also guaranteed a supply of freshwater), famously declared "This will be the place for a village." His village grew slowly for about 20 years before gold was discovered nearby. Nothing was ever quite the same again after that, and now "Marvellous Melbourne" is a city of 4 million people.

Since this was the furthest upstream that ships could reach, the Customs house was built at this point (marked above).
It is now the Immigration Museum, as seen below, looking north this time:

So, in a sense, this is the origin of Melbourne.

But Melbourne has another origin too, a surveyors' origin.

Batman built a shack on "Batman's Hill", not far west of the customs house, and the city of Melbourne, beyond the inner grid which aligns with the river, was subsequently surveyed from there, with a grid oriented to magnetic North at the time (hence Melbourne is tilted 7deg clockwise from true North). Many of the major roads of modern Melbourne lie on this one mile grid, even far from the city centre. Locals (or anyone who wants to have a look at a map) will see that Sydney Road and Royal Parade to the North and Swan Street and Riversdale Road to the east align with Batman's Hill, just west of Spencer Street, about inline with Flinders Lane. Even Springvale Road, *exactly* 12 miles east, is on this grid.

Long after Batman's shack was gone, the top of Batman's Hill was still an important landmark, particularly for surveyors.

Even Batman's Hill did not survive progress, but the surveyors would not be beaten. The pole you see behind my bike below marks the top of Batman's Hill, long after the hill itself has gone!

Here's the location in Nearmap. Once again, username abc1234, password abc1234.

So we're looking for the centre, the origin, of your city, town or village.
It might be the location someone stood and said something like "We're gunna have ourselves a village here", it might be the centre of a typical North American grid city, where the W streets become E streets, and S becomes N. It might be the shallow ford across a brook somewhere in Europe where the Romans first set up camp.

Get us some pics, show us where it is on a map, and tell us a bit about the history, why the spot you chose is "the origin" of your community.

Well, I don't know if I would call those large bridges, but you did get four in one picture...good grab.

Even better that it got out of the States again.

I could have gone for the Westgate bridge, but it would be hard to get more bridges in the background, and having recently discovered the Batman's Hill marker and it's history, the whole thing sort of came together from there.

Some of the recent tags have been fairly "American". I have been having evil thoughts about making the new tag a photo of an American embassy. I wonder how many people would twig that a Canadian or Argentinian Embassy in the US would qualify!

I always do what I can to post tags that are not American exclusive themes. Makes it more fun to see where the tags gets carried off to.

I'm guessing there's a bike in that picture, right?
