this is why i use a clip type. all you need it a pare of pliers to put one on. some vise grips and a nut help to but can be done with out.

A rivet link done right will never break or come loose. They must be done with the "right" tool or failure is always possible. As for a clip type I have used them on dirtbikes and on my racebikes where I am in constant observance of the link. Street bike, I never use a clip type.

If you are using a rivet link invest in the tool (Motion Pro makes a few good ones) it'll pay off for iteslf in no time.

he's not riding a 120hp bike. he's riding a KTM 450,, or maybe it's one the honda. ether way nether bike will ever put the kind of stress I've put on a clip type link on my 660 Raptor. where he rides that chain will never see the kind of millage the ones on the FZ did before they where shot.

on a dirtbike/dualsport i see no reason to run a rivet type link. and the only time I've seen clip type links come off are ether on warn out chains or someone bent the clip putting it on with a screwdriver, or the put it on the wrong direction.

I however do look at the master-link every time I lube the chain on my XL and as little as i ride it now. that's every time I get it out when I ran it every day i looked at it every two or three tanks of gas. 200 or 300 miles.

I have the bikemaster rivet kit (I think, tired right now and not bothering to check) and it cost $120 and it's VERY worth it, the riveted chain I did came loose due the link we added didn't fit correctly and the pins didn't rivet properly and they slipped out.

Several guys at the Hattiesburg Cycles even said rivets are the way to go because it's pretty common for a masterlink to come off, sure my bikes are powerhouses but things do happen.

I'm actually going to just keep the kit and links in the 650's satchel since it's a really small box. I just rode the bike to work and forgot that I didn't correct the link that was a misfit.

Cool, least one of us is enjoying the KLR.
Yup. Kinda doing a tune up/maintanence/remodel on my house. I'm tied down to the roof at this point. Things didn't go as planned a few weeks back and just now getting to work on the roof. Nearly halfway done with that. Then it's back to the interior.
