Best 50/50 tires??

Hi

Sorry about this, I ask you before but I'm still having doubts.
I'm planning a trip in the Alps, 2500 km tarmac and about 500km off road.
What do you think about this combination: Metzeler Sahara Enduro 3 on front and Mitas E07 rear?

I've just ordered a Heidenau K60 rear and Pirelli Scorpion Rally front for my new S10. But I've no experience with these on the S10 yet, so no idea if this helps. E07s work well up back on my DR650.

The Pirelly looks too off road to this trip.
Some guys recommend me the Sahara. They say is too soft for the rear wheel and perfect in the front.
And I’m concerned about grip in wet tarmac with the Mitas but no much problem in the rear wheel with the TC.
That’s why I’m thinking in this combination.

I can't find the K60, only the K60 Scout and I don't like much this solid band in the centre, It seems to me not very suitable for off road... ???

Obviously, being YOU, you need a knobbier tire for your style of off road, so it should work.

For anybody wondering why, the idea is to keep the tire with better traction on the front and with Jaumev's TC comment, he seems to recognize this already.

Depends on what you mean by "off road".

~100 Teneres just finished a rally in Colorado.

A small sample:




I would guess the K60 (scouts) was by far the most common shod tires. I assure you that the tire has more grip (bite) than the solid center strip implies. Truth is, if you get down and look at the contact patch as it touches the surface, much more than that strip is at work.

Having said that, it is not a knobby. True. I mounted a Big Block for the various mountain tracks I attacked. I loved the soft (short life) bite of the Kenda. It was great on tarmac too!



But every single summit I reached was also visited by multiple Teneres on K60's. It's obvious that K60 gets the job done. :) And unlike the Big Block, it also got the Teneres back home, to places like Florida, Texas, Tennessee..........

Like Dirt_Dad, I cut across the center strip with a dremel tool at each side block. Took about 20 minutes and did help in the rain. This was after the tire had significant wear already and MANY rain miles.

Congratulations on the Super Tenere rally! That must have been a blast.
Nice to see the Tenere doing what it does best.
I wonder what it sounds like to line up 100 STs and fire them up all at once?

If I can ever stop farkling my Super Canary, I may actually ride it.

There is a full thread on the K60. Different sizes of the rear tire have a different tread pattern - solid center band (wider) vs. interrupted center band (narrower). There has also been an evolution of the tire design. Older ones are different from current tires. Go back a few pages in Beasts to find the thead. Lots of good information. Bottom line: some love it, some hate it. It depends on your bike and your riding style.

Lots and lots of people take the K60 Scout off road on 1200cc Adv bikes.

In this trip I don't need big knobs, I'm going to do soft off road. I don’t like tarmac and hate it if is wet, so in this trip I prefer to have the tires more road oriented.

You’re right. In this bike the TC works so well that I’m more afraid to loose grip in the front than in rear.

Trailer hitches

I'm narrowing down my next bike choices between the Tenere and a GSA. The GSA has the edge right now because of the manufactured hitches available.

I've been pulling a trailer with my FJR and for two up camping, bringing my dog and groceries up to my camp it has been awesome.

I also have a DR650. I wouldn't even think about pulling it on a trailer. A 400lb bike plus the weight of the trailer just doesn't sound like a good plan.

I don't think I have ever pulled over 250 pounds and while you hardly notice it once underway on a straight away, it can want to push the ass of the bike in corners and it does effect braking.
